Diff noise

Hi,

I have a toyota hiace power van that is making a horrible bearing noise. Im certain its the rear diff that is making it. Should the output stubs be tight in the side carrier (e.g not move up and down and left and right?) Im thinking the carrier bearings have failed causing the noise?
