Is there anywhere to connect the speedo cable other than the gearbox? Or with extra parts?

Regards.

I believe cable speedo's can be converted to electronic (nothing noticeable from the front), this could then be operated from a sensor on the differential/final drive unit?

I once bought a set containing a small electric motor that drives a mechanical speedo from a Volvo classic specialist:
http://www.hukebasart.nl/huke/?Elektrische_snelhei...

They have an English translation of the mounting instruction on their website.
The electric motor speed is controlled by a magnetic pick up on a rotating part (like a prop shaft). In this way you can retain an original speedo without converting the internals to electronic (which is also an option).
