Favourite Military Aircraft

Spotting the DC3 over Farnborough today, in D-Day stripes got me thinking about the Sea Fury (which had very similar stripes for Korea, I believe), which is my all time favourite piston engined plane.

It got me thinking about my favourites (I was a real plane nut as a kid, but less so as I grew up and not much at all now) and I realised they're ALL FAA planes.

I don't have any one favourite - I like 'em all.

It almost depends on what model I am building as to what my current favourite happens to be. Right now I'm trying to finish a pre-war Grumman F4F Wildcat, so that's my "favourite" for the moment.

I used to live near RAF Mildenhall when the SR-71 was based there. Watching it taking off and land left a lasting impression.

The F117 was the poster on my childhood bedroom wall and chuffed to see up close several times when I was a kid.

But really not much can beat the Vulcan for sheer presence

But not just Harriers, F-8 Crusader, Mig 25 Foxbat, Mig 31 Foxhound, F-15 Eagle, F-16, F/A-18, Sea Vixen, Phantom, Tornado, EE Lightning, Buccaneer and of course the mighty Vulcan.

If they fly I love 'em all so I'll restrict myself to the RAF types I've flown in

Chipmunk, Hastings, Britannia and Hercules

And if I allow myself a foreign indulgence the mighty CH47 Chinook of the US of A


I don't count various Boeings in this

Fancy me forgetting that when discussing several miles of Boeing metal tubes cut off to length and plonked on top of some wing and engine sets.

But as ever Eric old chum you are right.

I do have to say, however that the Boeing in favour CH47 was a far more awesome beastie that any 7-7 I sat in.

I do have to say, however that the Boeing in favour CH47 was a far more awesome beastie that any 7-7 I sat in.

I suppose you could say that the CH-47, although manufactured by Boeing, was originally a Vertol project which before was Piasecki.

I actually like Boeing's airliner products - especially the 727, which has a sleek elegance to it (although it's not a "military" aircraft as such so shouldn't really be mentioned in this thread).
I also think the 757 is a great aeroplane.

Let me expand on that - I loved the idea of pilots basically strapped to a 'two fking huge engines'.



Another of my all time faves was the Mosquito. Just a stunning aircraft.
