Hi Guys,
I don't post here often but I came across a double discount offer on Burrows site http://www.burrowsmotorcompany.co.uk/news-events/d... and I'm thinking about getting a Kia Picanto.
I'm currently only 19 and it'll be my second car -Getting rid of my ancient 16 year old Ford Ka- (hopefully if I get it) I know its only a Kia and there not great but what do you guys think of them in general? Are they reliable?

7 year warranty adds some peace of mind I guess (or the balance if used).
My parents have a Kia Soul. On the one hand it doesn't feel as well built as other cars, but then it is pretty simple with not much to go wrong. Plus the dealer has been excellent at sorting out some early niggles.
In summary - you could do a lot worse.

)Thanks for the reply - Judging by that it should suite what I need it for quite well.
I'm just aiming for it to be a run around between work and home (only a few miles) and the odd trip to see uni friends etc so I won't be getting that high mileage.
I just need to find something that isn't going to cost me an arm and a leg to keep running.

k....ANYTHING is better than a Kia. It's designed for people who still mourn that they can't buy a Rover (and retired when Rover had Austin in front of it and brown was cool the first time around)...but for whom a Honda is too 'out there' and expensive.The 'stink of piss' seats is not Korean new car smell.
I don't really want an old mini because (although I've never looked into it) I feel they'd have issues with breaking down etc? as in costly to run and repair.
What about a Vauxhall Corsa? That's whatm y dad keeps badgering me to have a look at, as he's a fan of his.
I'm also quite kean on the Peugeot 306 but again these are all old so unsure because of costly repairs.

Yaris, fiesta or polo. Find one you like and buy it.

I bought a garage full of tools, and taught myself to Mig weld, spray panels and repair glassfibre just to keep the thing on the road.
You could get a decent one, but you'll spend a lot of time greasing knuckle joints, adjusting shims etc. as they are not at all maintenance-free.
I'd have one as a second car in a heartbeat, but as a second car.
Eh eh the Corsa ain't too bad! I know the name Kia ain't the most luxurious but they do seem okay.
Is the Fiesta reliable? I've also heard bad things about Ford in general, I mean my Ka was quite decent for a £400 run around.
Is there anything that I choose that will please you people :P

I'm not sure you've read that advert closely enough. It's a "double discount" (ie price reduction on over-priced stock they can't sell) on USED cars. I've just skimmed through the first 9 pages of their stock list and there isn't a picanto in there. There are some much nicer cars such as Fiat Pandas, Toyota Aygos and Seat Ibizas for under £6k, so I would go with one of those, once you work out what you can afford to insure.
Don't be dazzled by the double discount cobblers - check an online price guide for a decent price for the car you're looking at (or get one of those What Car -type price guides from WHS - they're inaccurate, but better than nothing)and use that to determine whether the price is fair.

Check the insurance cost for a mk1 Mx5, or even better a Eunos (might be hard to get insurance though). You can pick a decent one up for <2k and they are generally cheap to run. The main issue is with rust, but if you look around you'll find one that's rust free (like mine) or has recently had sills etc welded and will be fine for years to come.
I know the Mx5 is a bit of a cliche, but it really is fun to drive. I cant think of anything I'd rather have for the money. Tyres and breaks are cheap, the engines are very reliable, and there are lots of aftermarket parts available to make it your own. They also do quite well on track.
I think you'd be much better to spend a few grand on a cheap, fun Mx5 than 8k on a Kia.

The 1.3 engine in the Kas is a boat anchor, but is reliable. The 1.25 in fiestas is a very good engine, as is the 1.4.

I found the Picanto on the used Kia page, and yeah the insurance is the major bummer. My Ka which was the lowest insurance I could find with a tiny 1.3 petrol engine cost me around £970 a year to insure, but it was my first year driving so fingers crossed it should go down no matter what I buy as long as I'm not stupid with it.
