Not sure it would be cynical. They are a corporate business that exists solely to create profit. They are not a charity. Am I being cynical here or are JLR just cashing in on the current market values?
This is a fantastic way to make sure the market knows that they are opening a 'made to order' division. Every car publication is telling their customers without any marketing spend. The cars will also ensure headlines at many shows over the next couple of years. All in all it seems like a fantastic bit of business sense.
Jaguar have what appears to be an opportunity to be able to produce six brand new cars having delayed their production for half a century. To be able to produce those cars to period construction and use and type approval rules is a truly extraordinary thing that should be celebrated, whatever the price tag on the cars is.
Look at it another way. If Land Rover offered us a series 1 80" brand new to 1951 spec, that would mean no belts, pretensioners, windscreen, top, doors, airbags, "safety cell", ABS, drive-by-wire, "driver aids" and so on, would we not all jump at the chance of finding a way round all the legislation and nannying that goes with a new car? Yes please!!!!

If Land Rover offered us a series 1 80" brand new to 1951 spec, that would mean no belts, pretensioners, windscreen, top, doors, airbags, "safety cell", ABS, drive-by-wire, "driver aids" and so on, would we not all jump at the chance of finding a way round all the legislation and nannying that goes with a new car? That wouldn't find a way round the legislation and neither does the Jag, you wouldn't be able to use them on the road. Look at it another way. I'm not sure. Does the legislation come into play for such a small production run? Isn't this how Caterham get around it.Maybe they would like to have another go at building all the XKSS

Isn't that exactly the point? The production of those cars was in effect simply delayed,if for rather a long time! The chassis numbers were allocated at the time. Would be interesting to know whether there are in fact registration numbers also in place, that would seem unlikely.
