A friend of mine has a car that's in pretty poor condition, and is likely to get the price hammered by the likes of WeBuyAnyCar. He wants a quick sale, and was wondering if it's common for dealers out there to take a car that is say £6k, and swap it for a £4k car plus cash.

Yes it does happen, depends on dealer and the two cars.

Obviously dont expect a dealer to value your friends car at the price he thinks its worth.

Your "friend" will certainly not do any better through a trade-in deal. How do you think the dealer values the car?

Yes, no problem, but of course you'll be selling at trade and buying at retail.

If the 'friend' says it's worth 6K, it's probably only worth 3K to the dealer.

Depending on what the 'poor condition' actually constitutes and the cost & time factor of putting the car into retail forecourt sellable condition you may find that a dealer wouldn't want it - at any price.

They may. I exchanged a 911 Carrera for an Audi RS6 and some cash. About £8/9K IIRC.
