Man Maths ....
Discussion
Your mate at work has been talking about car sharing with you - therefore your petrol cost has been halved.
Insurance is probably slightly cheaper if you restrict yourself to 5000 miles per year - that's an extra few hundred quid saved
The old car is out of warranty now and will prboably give you a £1000 bill soon - £1000 extra to spend on the new car
You were going to buy a digital radio for the car but the new car comes with one - Another £500 to spend on the new car
Basically, keep going and you can convince the wife your new car is free.

I could live for today then be screwed next month. I need an AMG in my life ,even if i did change job i wouldn't actually get more money as i`ve tried that already.
Then again running an AMG to 14,000 miles a year will send me bankrupt quicker than Katie Prices marriages.
I just keep thinking its only an extra 60quid SUL a week so its realistic , then i look at tyre and brake costs

an attempt at man maths has been performed recently and has been shown to the Missus.
A Elise S1 (weekends) + fiat 500 (train station daily run) = less than Clio 200.
Insurance for the two is less than the Clio, fuel bills will be less, tax on both is less then the Clio
All other factors have been ignored in case they end up costing me more....
.... Am I doing this right?

I have the same hard time justifying these things to myself!
Been wanting to swap my car (boring 1.6 Ford Focus) for a year or so now since I'm slowly approaching my mid-20's and insurance isn't taking me for all I have.
Going from something slow and boring, to something fast and fun, the numbers in my head just keep going up and up to a point when I end up thinking sod it I'll have to keep what I have until the house deposit is sorted.

No, for it to be proper man maths you need to add in a wildly over-optimistic estimate for how much the Elise will appreciate in value and for how much the Clio will depreciate; plus assume that the Clio will constantly break down because it's French and the Elise and Fiat, obviously being built by superior British and Italian engineers, will be perfectly reliable.
I had a clio 200 on finance at around £300/month. Convinced the wife to get a 172 instead so I could track it @ £1500. Crashed it after about 5 months, but that's ok because it worked out the same payments. Then convinced her a Clio V6 was the way to go as it would be free motoring/none depreciating car. She went for that. Sold it for more than I bought it so made a 'profit', but she didn't take running costs into consideration.
Now all that man maths has me in a good position to basically get whatever I want. Now got a 'free' mini GP

People keep saying you could die tomorrow so live for the day.
I always find that phase is said by people who earn their living by others taking out debts, the reality is you probably won't die tomorrow, but any debts will still be there and you will have to cope with them them.Me, I say don't get into excessive debt on a car unless you can help it. Fast cars do cost; the brakes etc always seem to be more expensive.
Then I am rubbish at Man maths; I don't buy expensive cars anymore as I worry about them getting scratched.
I've discussed this at length with Mrs HJ.
Apparently the really important things are; Low RFL, Low Ins, Low purchase price, Low fuel costs, space for her Mother. (maintenance costs unimportant because this rarely gets done)
Anything left over goes into a separate fund labeled handbag/shoe/nails/hair/ emergency Champagne (in case of a rainy day or something)
Seems to work for us.
Bills for my Merc always arrive in a plain envelope and therefor ignored
