Getting into the Oil & Gas industry ?

After my last thread about profit shares not being honored by my MD, and him now pushing me to back and help out in the Procurement department of the business instead of focusing on my companies (Alarms & AV). I have decided i need to start looking for a new job and was thinking about going down either the Project management route or Procurement/purchasing avenue. (I have an economics degree if thats worth much)

I would like to try and get into the oil & gas industry, and wanted opinions on the best route in?
I was thinking of applying for jobs in the project services sector (either buyer/planner/estimator etc)

I work in procurement in the oil and gas sector, a few points in no particular order:

- what do you want to procure? services (eg sub contractors) or materials?
- off shore? sub-sea? refinery?
- do you have any experience of procurement?
- any knowledge of contracts/ law/ t&c's?
- do you have any experience of pulling together tenders? evaluating tenders?
- if you were tasked with looking after term contracts, do you have knowledge of scaffolders? mechanical contractors? civils works? NDT? steeple jacks? cleaning? catering?
- where are you based? aberdeen? london? abroad?

there is a lot of different stuff to consider in 'procurement' in oil and gas. I come from a background as a Quantity Surveyor in the consruction industry and find the roles quite suited to each other. Some of the things i do are more admin functions, but the more specialised technical side of things, i'm very glad i have my QS background.
