Do I need to bleed the system once I've fitted a new expansion tank? I'm assuming not. I've also been told that I should run the car with the cap off to allow any air out of the system. Is that correct?

I've removed and refitted my expansion tank before without having to bleed the system I did it by draining down the system to just below the bottom fitting which is higher than the bleed taps on the water rails.

Cheers Olly, that was what I was planning. I seem to remember taking it off to replace the starter motor and I simply drained the tank and then topped it up when I put it back on

I always run the engine while filling up the water. If i drain it completely i fill part way then start the engine then fill to the line. the running engine helps remove trapped air. It's always worked for me. But it's still always a good idea to check the bleed screw on top or the radiator.
