Space flight simulators?
Discussion
I've always fancied flying above the Earth's atmosphere (or any other planet's for that matter) maybe docking with a space station, that sort of thing, it doesn't need to be a shuttle simulator something sci-fi would do as long as the performance and graphics are really good. Not too bothered about shooting at other space craft but am prepared to give it a go.
I'm in the process of obtaining a quite powerful computer with at least two monitors, strictly for work purposes but while I'm at it I might as well get a third monitor and have some fun.
Can anyone suggest a suitable simulator or game?
TIA

Kerbal Space Program without a doubt.
Dismiss the cartoon characters and this is one hell of a fantastic simulation. I've learnt loads about orbital mechanics and planetary transfers. Having just mastered the art of building rockets that orbit earth, I've moved on and can regularly land on other planets and moons.
I've sunk countless hours into it.
Oh, and you will grow to love the cartoon characters (Kerbal's)

X3 Terran Conflict / Albion Prelude is pretty good.
You have the choice of trading, fighting , transporting people, exploring etc so is quite varied.
X3 is great if you can get into it, the learning curve is beyond colossal. It does have a bit of a disappointing brick wall I felt when you get to a certain point you can be making so much money just idling havign set up a few key factory networks it gets almost boring, maybe that's because the combat never interested me..You have the choice of trading, fighting , transporting people, exploring etc so is quite varied.
Kerbal is a safe bet though, though that can be pretty annoyingly hard

No where near finished yet but Star Citizen is the upcoming space sim. Its generally expected not only to be the best space sim ever created but as a aaa+ title with a now close to $44,000,000 development fund it should rival any current or upcoming game for quality.
You can buy into alpha and fly about in the arena commander module for about $40. You will get the entire game included in that cost when its available too.

It will be a good test for any new build gaming pc.

For the future, this. Excellent pedigree. Freelancer is from the same guy, fairly casual, but enjoyable. Freespace was the other one I used to love. You can buy into alpha and fly about in the arena commander module for about $40. You will get the entire game included in that cost when its available too.
