Went to get the car out the garage ready for tomorrow and the car wont start.

Fuel pump spins ok when 12v applied but it's not getting 12v via the normal route

Can see 12v at the imobilser sw, but if I pull the relay in and out it clicks. Fuses all OK. Everything else works fine on the car

Fired up ecu diags and it won't connect to the laptop

Imobiliser issues? It's only a few years since Carl put in a new alarm in

Definately imobiliser issues - the red led keeps flashing.

Have you tried the fob in the slot rather than the button to clear the imobiliser?

Yup - and holding the start button for ages.

Immobiliser won't turn off - led light keeps flashing. Car will lock happily from the fob, unlock.
Tried both fobs, tried both square fobs in the slot.

This is after tracing 12v through all the wiring back to the ecu.

Diagnostics won't fire up either - won't connect as I can't disable the immobiliser?

Given up now - pulled out of Caring with Cars. Gutted.

You say the fuel pump isn't getting 12v and also you tried holding the starter button for ages. Does this mean both the fuel pump and the starter motor are not functioning?

It would be unlikely for both to go together if the fault was age related. The immobiliser protects both on separate circuits so it must be a more serious immobiliser failure.

Does everything else occur as normal? Start, mil light, beep etc? Just no fuel pump and no starter turning over?

Have you spoken to Carl? I know it is late Sat but he does stand by the quality of his work and it might be work a quick call. I think I have his mobile number if that would help.

Battery left disconnected overnight hasn't helped. No fuel, no starter and the ecu diags wont fire up.

I've the car book in for a service and MOT at the end of the month so I guess it'll just have to be colelcted.

It's done it a few times now randomly in the last year but always started after a while. Guess it's gone terminal.
My first real problem in 9 years so I shouldn't complain.

Hi mate, give David Fairclough a ring on 07721 654829. He will be able to help you get it started.

That's odd. If it was the immobilizer on the way out usually (as I said) one or the other circuit will break down first (the starter motor or the fuel pump). If both are going together and coming back to life intermittently it doesn't sound like an age related issue in the immobilizer.

Have you tried the very basic test of wiggling the loom/connectors for the immobilizer and the ECU? Do you get the mil light and the start beep as normal or is the car just dead?

All the plugs are ok and I've checked for any chafing behind the seats. I've changed all fuses in the fuse box for new ones with LEDs to show if they blow and I've checked the big fuse.

Lost now. I'll just have to wait until next month when Neil's free to get it recovered.

Has anyone considered, or carried out, a full removal of the immobiliser system. Is it something in the too difficult pile? I for one would rip mine out and be done with it.

I am speaking with Carl soon and will put this to him. Got a mate here that is keen to just remove it all for me, but just wondering how deep into the system it goes? Best I seek advice up front I reckon.

I remember reading somewhere that one of the issues with the immobiliser is that the high current relay was used for the ignition rather than being connected into the starter circuit. Hence the relay fails after some period of time.

Probably why the addition of an additional relay driving the starter solenoid resolves the issue as it draws significantly less current.

I got a replacement alarm and immobiliser from Abacus and made sure the beefy relay was hooked into the starter. I've not had any problems since.
