JLR - worth a punt?

Looking to get back into PM properly, having been off doing my own thing for a while, and being Midlands based JLR have a fair number of possible opportunities, either as a contractor or permie.

Just wondering if anyone has any feedback on them, either positive or negative.

I work for one of there main suppliers and they are a good employer from what I have been told.

Fixed holidays is the only downside for me working for one of their suppliers

I'm also interested to hear the feedback on this.
My wife and I are looking maybe to return to the UK next year and I'm tempted by both JLR or AML.
Were both from the area anyway so it's got that as a plus.

I receive a lot of contractor type roles via linkedin for JLR manufacturing, but I've been in powertrain development and reliability now for 6years.

Some feedback on the benefits would be useful to understand, car scheme etc

Loads of contract roles available as they're desperate for people at the moment.

Permie roles are harder to come by and you need to be a manager / group leader to get the decent car scheme and health care.

If you like management bullst phrases, powerpoints, tracker spreadsheets, acronyms and progress meetings then it'll be right up your street.

AML is much 'nicer', far less red tape. I know people at both and it's common to go between the two.

Dont mind going contracting, and my ears filter out management bullst phrases (they've had plenty of practice!). Been put forward for a few roles, I'll see what happens.

Okay, it's like getting a permanent job except

a) The interview is solely about finding out if a week on Monday, you will be able to start, and by Wednesday, be at 100% without any training, and almost zero induction. So the interview is an hour max.
b) They can sack you tomorrow if you don't do a)
c) They want you now, so if your contract has 4 weeks to run, forget it.
d) Very little negotiation. When I'm not looking, I tell any RC that I need twice what I'm currently on. When I am looking, I have a spread-sheet, where I work out travel expenses, and accommodation vs hourly rate, and compare it to my last contract. If I end up with more or less the same after tax, after taking all that into account, I apply, if not I don't. There's room for negotiation on renewal, and I've seen 10% twice, and a previous client.
e) Ltd Vs Umbrella ? If it's a long term plan, why would you give away 10% for something you and a decent accountant could do for 1% ? Umbrella is for a stop gap, or for people barred from being directors IMHO.
f) because of my relative location flexibility, I reckon that I'm earning double (after expenses 5/3rds) what I earned in my last permie job in a depressed industry in a depressed part of the north.

Depends on whether you like the job or not? No harm in going along and finding out, unless its just not up your street...

A lot of those roles are being filled by grads barely even a year out of uni.

So £25 per hour + convenient ignorance of IR35 = excellent money!

I had one a couple of months ago. They seems really nice but the amount of HR mumbo jumbo was crazy.

Then again, maybe everyone's like that...

Certainly the car scheme when you're management would be nice !

Contracted to them last year, wouldn't go back though money was ok but it was the most boring job with the worst management I have yet met.

Switched teams and now permanent staff at Bmw much better place to work, nicer atmosphere/ environment and the works a lot more interesting

I went to a 2 day interview at Gaydon in 2002. It was a great experience! They took me out in various Land Rovers on the off-road course. At the time the were testing Jags and setting them up for Clarkson. We then went to the design studio and saw the next 2-3 generations of Land rover products. We also saw models that were not out at the time and then saw everything else they designed. I also got chance to see the cars from tomb raider and judge dred.

Then it was off to the reverse engineering department where they had an Audi A2 mounted on the wall because it was the biggest advancement in car design they had seen in years.


I doubt you will see the design studio but it's at the end of the building through a door with security.

I didn't get the job I went for but that was because I was st in the assessment. It was for the grad training and back then they were giving over 30k for the role I went for.
