Nikon D5300 lenses

Im still confused

I had a Canon 600d and thought "Canon vs Nikon" = 1 had motorised lenses, 1 didnt, not it seems NIKON has lenses with / without motors...

Ive got a d5300 and dont know what lenses are 100% compatible .....

ive seen a list but still confused

It depends what you mean by compatible.

Physical: The Nikon F-mount is common to all Nikon DSLRs and has been going since about 1959, so (almost) any lens will fit physically.

Electronic: As the years have gone by more and more information is passed between lens and camera - note the little contacts. So you might have a lens that will fit, but will only operate manually.

Focusing: This I think is what you're driving at. To achieve autofocus the camera body somehow has to turn the focus ring on the lens. This is either done physically using a motor in the body, or electronically via the contacts to a motor in the lens.

Lower Nikon DSLRs don't have a motor in the body, so will only autofocus if there is a motor in the lens instead. Nikon lenses with motors in them are designated 'AF-S'. Most of them are AF-S and you'll also find the same thing with Sigma (HSM) and others too.

So just look for AF-S and you'll be fine. What you need to avoid, if you want autofocus, is AF-D.

In my opinion, buying one of the cheaper Nikons without a focus motor is a false economy. You limit yourself on lens options, and some of the older Af-D lenses are brilliant.

If it actually says 'AF-S' on it, yes. Also consider the Sigma 70-200mm f2.8 HSM in its various versions.
