INSURANCE on cars when you live abroad.

I wanted to ask if anyone knows of an Insurance Company that insures you on cars which you own in other countries?

I live in Dubai and have a car in the UK. Every year I go back I tend to get "Temporary" insurance with www.tempcover.com To action this I have to 1) Have the car registered in my brothers name in the UK and 2) Say that I live at his address.

I have to say, I can't believe in this day and age one can't insure a car which they own in another country. After all, what the hell do all these chaps do who have houses and cars in endless countries?

Calls always go something like this:

Me : "Can you insure me on my car in the UK?"
Insurance Company: "Where do you live?"
Me: "I Live in Dubai by I own a car in the UK"
Insurance Company: "No, we don't cover you, you have to be a UK Citizen".

What crap.

Any numbers of decent insurance firms who cater for a globalised world would be appreciated.

Actually Luke, this is the norm'. I haven't suggested this...but this is what I'd do. Give your registered address as a family member i.e. brother and where the car is genuinely kept. And simply leave it at that.

My view here is that it's no business of an insurance company to know if I was working overseas or not. The only exception to this would be permanent residency...if I was permanently living in Dubai with no intention of coming back.

Also, just noted your wording...

Insurance Company: "No, we don't cover you, you have to be a UK Citizen".

There's a huge difference between 'living' somewhere and having permanent residency there. Are you a UK citizen who complies with domicility?

I've had this issue in the past, it was baffling.

I even had a lady at the well known insurer who advertises on here tell me that because my business trips and holidays amounted to being more than 6 months out of the UK that year I wasn't English! It was a very surreal conversation.

I had several similar conversations with other firms who seemed to have a considerable issue with someone being outside of the UK for 6 months+ and in the end left the cars in storage.

Finding genuine specialist insurers has become somewhat of an art form.

I have a UK Passport but lived in Dubai for 10 years....and no plans to come back.

The whole "Domocile" is a tricky one. However, I have no property and very few links to the UK. SO...for the purposes of the tax man...and I am not UK Domociled. No doubt when a kick the bucket the UK tax man will still try and stripe the family for 40% UK Death Tax though. That's the only "Domocile" I am concerned about.

So, whats this other option you mentioned bearing in mind the above.

Its fine for the moment, my Integrale is under my brothers name etc. However when I start buying more cars it will become an issue. ...I don't want them all under his name you know. Also, it begs another question, can one own a car in the UK on the Log Book if I don't live there?

I also wonder what people with houses in cars in like 10 countries do? They must insure them somehow. Under a global policy?

I am with AXA Private Client Group here in Dubai and they are very good at quirky things re insurance, however even they wont touch me on a car in the UK.

I live in Dubai. My TR4 is insured in my name with Hagerty in the UK.

They were the only broker I found who would provide cover.
