Filling a supercharger with oil

Hi all

I am currently in the middle of fitting a supercharger to my mx5 weekend toy. (Then the bloody sun came out)

The instructions with the service kit I have are clearly for a professional workshop as the say:-

Remove supercharger
Vacuum out the old oil (yeh right :hehe;)
Remove nose
Replace coupler
Refit nose
Remove filler screw
Fill up with oil. Up to the bottom on the filler hold thread
Replace filler screw
Refit supercharger

Now, that's all fine and dandy and when the nose comes back from the engineering place (I rounded the filler screw, oops) I'm comfortable with what remains.

However, it doesn't mention whether the 'charger should be horizontal or vertical when filling it. Vertical would leave it completely full with oil, horizontal, from the location of the filler, about 2/3 full. So, question is, which way?

I assume it's horizontal and you fill it like you would a diff, but now I'm concerned enough to check!

I'd have thought you'd fill it like a diff too.

You never "fill" them.

They all have a specified amount and type of oil.

Ok. Any idea on the eaton m45 from the mini? That's what I'm fitting to the Mazda.

Indeed an specific oil and amount is required I did on my SLK, the kit came with a rather large syringe which had a clear hose attached on the end, I then drew out as much oil as it would allow me to draw.

Poured it into a measuring cup and then put back in the exact same amount using a clean syringe and hose length .

The old oil will stink to high heaven.

Speak to 1320Mini, they've changed the oil on a few superchargers.

As some added info, BMW/MINI will tell you that the supercharger is a non-serviceable item, they do not stock replacement oil, and recommend you replace the supercharger if it is showing signs of wear.

Mercedes will tell you that their superchargers do not have any oil in them so obviously do not stock replacement oil (Yes, really!)

Jaguar will tell you where to buy it and exactly how much.

Hold the supercharger in the same orientation as it's in in it's original vehicle. You don't have to muck about rotating a MINI on a spit to change the supercharger oil - it's already at the right angle.
