If a 350i has been fitted with a 4.6l upgraded engine are there any external features to the engine that would help me identify it as a 4.6 rather than the standard 3.5?

Also, does a 350i have an LSD as standard, and which make it it?

Thanks.

If it's a factory 4.6 then it probably carries the Landrover engine code, see Rimmer Brothers website for a list (it'll start something like 47A). If it's been bored out from a smaller capacity (unusual) then you'd need to see bore and stroke dimensions (as in, physically measure them, not take someone's word for it wink)

LSD wasn't standard and is rarely found on 350is.

This question comes up from time to time - yes definitely start from the engine number. And I have heard of people having LSD on a 350i so it isn't cut and dried.

However I wonder if we can do it with an experiment? How about a pipe into the spark plug hole, sealed well, and seeding into a pipe filled with water.

Give it a revolution and the air should be pumped into the pipe corresponding to the volume of the cylinder. Then you measure pipe diameter and the height of the air. Multiply by 4 per revolution.

Assuming the valves are sealing well this should give a reasonable estimate - I think you should be able to tell the difference between 3.5 or 4 or 4.6.....

I though LSD was standard on 350i's from S2 onwards? Mine certainly had one.

Mines 87 and has LSD
If it's an 4.6 shouldn't it have the later GEMS engine management and serpentine belts ? Should be a clue ?

I think all S2's had a slipper....mine has. There is a metal tab on one of the bolts on the diff that should tell you if you can read it through the grime!

Good point - isn't it cross-bolted at the bottom (possibly with a cradle) in which case you can stick an endoscope up the sump plug and take a look at its bottom end?

No one's mentioned the drive it like you stole it theory

If reaches 60 in under 5 seconds, and thunders on past 150 mph probably a 4.6 if slower replace with a larger one smile

Thanks for the suggestions, I'll check the engine number first.
