Yorkie took the final trip yesterday
Discussion
We lost one of our Yorkies yesterday, Max had got to 18 and age just caught up with him. His tendency to steal and eat family size packets of sweets and chocolates will be greatly missed.
We have an immediate problem in that his sister is still with us and the fact that he now isn't seemed to sink in last night. She howled all night.
Any one any tips on helping her through this? I don't want pining to shorten her life.

Sad news , as dog owners it's something we all have to face . I had a similar situation 8 years ago with my springers. They were both around 15 yrs but the dog ( Sam ) was ready to be PTS , several ailments and the final straw was when he could not stand without looking as if he wished he was already on the other side . The b
h ( Scamp ) was incontinent and had a few other problems but would have soldiered on for a few months more I'm sure .
I took the very difficult decision to send them off together . It broke my heart and I'm close to tears just recalling the final day but for them and me it was the right thing to do , she would have been totally traumatised by his absence and not something I wanted her to suffer for the few months she may , or may not , have lasted.
I don't think there is an easy answer or solution but I hope you find one that works for you and the one left behind

Thanks for that. Molly's had her problems they are 18, but there's too much life in her to let her go as well. I don't think the girlfriend and child would ever forgive me either!

I've been through this twice. Both times the survivor was subdued and a bit confused for a day or two, but then perked up with lots of kindnesses. I think most of it was just them reacting to the sombre mood in the house, rather than what we would call grief.
Hang in there, OP, and she'll be fine.

When I met my ex I had a Jack Russell. She ended up living with me, she wanted a dog so I bought her a puppy (I know, I know, I should have adopted but couldn't in the country we were in at the time). So this puppy grew up only ever knowing living with my own dog.Hang in there, OP, and she'll be fine.
After a few years we split up and took our own dogs with us... to be honest I don't think either dogs cared after the first day or two.
I think dogs in general would prefer to have company... but I don't think they particularly care which dog gives them it.
Thanks for the positive words. A new addition is not an option. Molly's an old girl and gets forgiven for little overnight accidents, climbing on the dining table to steal leftovers and routing through handbags for sweets....we feel a new addition would pick up bad habits.....
Plus we can't agree on breed for the next ones.....decided to give Molls lots of attention for the time she has left. Which sadly looking at her weight loss might not be too long.
Molly in action this Easter....she didn't eat the egg and denies being in the bin!

18 is a hell of a run
Out of 100+ dogs at the dog home we don't have a single one that has made it to that age.
Could be more, my girlfriend got them as rescue dogs 16 years ago and they were estimated at 2! Until this week they appeared indestructible. Molly had a few days in pet hospital after seeing off a bowl of sea monkeys a few years back but she's full of life again despite losing her brother.

Probably more then! A lot of rescue places turn the mileage back on their stock to make them more appealing Not sure what I've done to the photo!
