I know this has been discussed before but: I have changed my oil and filter and upon start up the oil warning light was coming on for up to 5 secs hot or cold so changed the filter thinking it was faulty and does the same but only when cold. I have a fram filter with anti drain valve in it. Any ideas folks?

5 seconds isn't too unusual I shall time mine tomorrow morning.

I only ever put millers in it. The thing that worries me most is that there is a definite metalic noise upon start up till the light goes off.

Metallic noise is heard when engine oil pressure is low, and during the initial startup this is normal for the first few seconds. There is however a residue of oil remaining on the engine components from the previous run and that is where quality oil plays a part. I always use STP oil treatment in the oil and this increases viscosity and oil pressure, but a good brand of oil normally has similar qualities built in.

This morning it took 4 seconds from first cranking, it fired after 2 (approx), 2 seconds running then it extinguished. The gauge takes a little longer to respond.

I use Castrol classic 20W/50 and a FRAM filter. Dunno about non-return valves.

Also note that the oil warning switch has a fair amount of tolerance they probably switch over at anything between 5 and 10 p.s.i. which will affect the timings.

A metallic clattering when starting an RV8 from cold is usually the valvetrain rattling until the cam followers pump up. Not much you can do about it except make sure it stops after a few seconds!
