Fontainbleau bouldering trip.

This summer myself and 4 friends are planning on travelling from Aberdeen to 'bleau for 10 -14 days in August to reward ourselves for being yet another year through/finished, our time at Uni.
The plan so far is relatively Non-existent, other than ratchet strap bouldering mats to the roof of my crappy old Volvo, Jump in said crappy old Volvo, drive to a ferry*, drive through France, and end up either camping or renting a lodge or similar near/ in Fontainbleau.
Now my question is, any road trip tips? e.g best places to stop and shake the legs out on the way, best 'cheap' food stops, and cheap accommodation. Also, is it frowned upon to just find somewhere sensible to ditch the car and pitch a tent in the woodland? What is the best (quickest) route to take to get around Paris?
I'd also settle for other pearls of wisdom/random tales of conquest and adventure from your kind and knowledgeable selves.

- Probably Dover, seems the cheapest,Chunnel is really expensive.

Presume that you've already been on ukc and ukb? They would provide you with the info regarding camping/car abandonment when you get to font.

There are laws against improvised camping in France I'm afraid, but you wouldn't be the first one to try it; you might get away with it if it's just a night or two and you're (very) discreet about it. Chongwong said:

August should be pretty quiet actually, the French all leave for the south. Think you should be ok on the Peripherique (it's the only time of year you can say that).Chongwong said:

Should probably be in the France section.With regards to DFDS, I know the Ferries are generally fine with roof boxes and such, but to they mind things being ratchet strapped to the roofs of cars?
