Hans Stuck and the Audi V8 DTM: Time For Tea?

What was the DTM like a quarter of a century ago? See here!

Think of Audi in motorsport and it's hard not to think of rallying first. Then probably Le Mans. Or perhaps the other way round. The fact it has only been fairly successful in touring cars probably limits that to third place in the ranking.

And over here you would probably think of the A4 quattros in the BTCC than any DTM exploits. So by way of a PH history lesson, here's Hans Stuck on what it was like to race an Audi V8 quattro against M3s and 190Es in 1990.

If that sounds like an unfair race, especially after learning that Audi won the DTM in 1990, then it was far closer than it sounds. The Audis were around 300kg heavier than the M3s which offset its power advantage, meaning Hans Stuck and Johnny Cecotto were just a few points apart going into the final race at Hockenheim.

Being 1990, there's a needlessly dramatic narrator and plenty of slow-mo skidding too. And it all looks marvellous.

Enjoy.

Racing at the limit - love it!

Like!

The footage of the rally car with spectators on either side was crazy!

IIRC Audi threw their toys out of the pram and flounced off in a sulk when the oganisers of the DTM deemed their flat plane crank illegal.

So cool that they entered the Audi V8 into DTM to do battle with the M3's and 190 Evo's. The equivalent these days of entering an A8 into the DTM. spin

Proper. One of the best T4Ts in ages.

Love that Audi decided in the last race that in order to ensure Cecotto finished where they wanted him, they simply added an extra car between him and first hehe

How good did those old 190Es look yum

All I could think about during this video was:

"In 1972, a crack commando unit was sent to prison by a military court for a crime they didn't commit. These men promptly escaped from a maximum security stockade to the Los Angeles underground. Today, still wanted by the government they survive as soldiers of fortune. If you have a problem, if no one else can help, and if you can find them....maybe you can hire The A-Team."

Real cars driven by real men!

They look awesome in all their glory, power sliding around the circuit.

..."the butt-o-meter..." smile

Just listened again, did he call it a "po-po meter?" laugh

A great character, did anyone else see them when they raced at Donington?

I also liked the Audi V8 as a road car, although you'd have been lucky to see one back in the day as they were pretty rare.
