Mercedes W210: Talk to me
Discussion
I've been unexpectedly offered a W210 E230 saloon from a friend at a very good price.
First things first: garaged from new. Not a hint of rust on foot, haven't been underneath it yet.
It's Avantgarde spec and looks resplendent.
What's the 230 engine like for mpg? I currently drive an 80/20 mix of motorway and b roads, very rarely get stuck in town thanks to a 4am commute.
Any help appreciated.

I had a W210 Estate. It was a 2.0 Auto in Elegance trim. It was 7 years old when I bought it 14 when I got rid.
Verdict. Very refined, very roomy, very comfortable. It was also surprisingly reliable (esp as it was built during the Daimler/Chrysler era when build quality and reliability was supposed to be diabolically poor).
Driven gently I could coax fuel consumption into the low 30s mpg (not bad for a big big old automatic two litre). Push it a bit and it dropped to the mid to high 20s.
Other observations? Car was dog slow (as if you could jump out and run faster slow). Sunroof, headlamp wash and rear wipers gave up the ghost eventually (forgivable at 13 years old?). The cost of repairing or replacing was more than the value of the car. Body held together till it was about 12. Last two year I had it it really started to look a banger.
If I ever needed such a large car again would I buy another? Hell yeah though some may say I'd be pushing my luck.

W210's are not bad at all reliability wise - much better than the W211/W203 (admittedly that's not saying a great deal). Body's rust like an old Cortina, everyone knows that. Those electronic keys are a PITA and cost a fair bit to put right if they play up. Autoboxes are good provided the oil/filter has a change. Window mechs are feeble.
Not much else to comment on.
We had an E230 estate - 1997 on a P - ours was only Elegance spec though, with grey cloth. It was a good car, we took it down to the south of France skiing two years running, it kept up with the rest of our convey sitting at 120 leptons quite happily. Dad gave it to my sister once it hit 200k miles.
It was replaced with the E430 Estate, which we still have in the family now.
