I have recently realised just how handy it is to have an air line (since borrowing a mates workshop for a while). They make life so much easier.... So, now I'm back to working in my front garden, I wondered whether this would be any use?

Our engineers at work carry these in their vans, ample to blow a tyre up etc.

Neat little unit, but I'm thinking more for impact drivers and wrench etc. I've got an old land rover as well as the TVR.

you need alot of air for impact guns, not sure a 50lt would be much use it would prob struggle on rusted suspension stuff.

These people do some good quality stuff at reasonable prices. I have got one of their 3 horsepower jobs which runs all my air tools, inc impact wrench and airbag lift without issues.

I have a 14cfm v twin similar to this (from link above):

If its an ok model it's about the minimum you need for air tools IMHO unless you are prepared to wait (lots) for the compressor to catch up.

If it's just an impact gun you're after I've used the snap on electric guns and they're really good. No air lines dragging around and quite powerful and just recharge. Probably just as cheap as buying the compressor and the gun.

Ive got the same compressor. Its really borderline using things like impact guns. The gun will need to be pretty high quality to be able spin a wheel lug off... Even waiting for the compressor to recharge, i cant get highly torqued wheel bolts off.

You either go for a bigger compressor, which takes up space or an electric gun.

50 litres is ample for an impact gun. I have a similar v twin but an older SIP model. I can run out of air it using a normal air ratchet for more than about 30 secs but that is very unusual and I only tend to exhaust it when using it to ratchet my chassis turner up and down.

It is more likely that the max pressure or the gun itself is the issue if having problems with an impact gun as if the nut doesn't turn in first 10 secs or so it is unlikely to do so!

For normal amateur maintenance activities without the need to spray 2.5 to 3hp with 50l with be fine.

Mine (old Hunter IIRC) spins crank pulley nuts / alternator pulley nuts / wheel HUB nuts quite happily...

Problem with a lot of this stuff is you can't really tell what quality you're getting even though a lot of them look the same? hence the "If its an ok model" caveat.

I brought the new Milwauke 18V Fuel Impact a few months back, Ok its bigger than a air impact but cordless. Wheel nuts and old suspension bolts come off in seconds. Also the batteries are interchangeable with other tools, so cuts future costs down.

Have the small compressors always been rated at 8bar ?, when i had one years ago it was rated at 10bar. That would make quite a difference to impacts etc

I bought this one from SGS Engineering and had it delivered last week, got it with the tool kit too and it's amazing. Rigged it up in my utility room and got a 50 foot hose on it. BEST THING EVER!!!

The amount of work I got done on my Land Rover on Saturday and the TVR on Sunday is ten times what I would've got done with just hand tools. The air ratchet is nice and compact and I can get it into tight awkward places where there's not enough room to twist a socket wrench.

Very impressed, can't believe I didn't get one sooner... now I want air powered EVERYTHING!! biggrin
