Hsving driven cars in the US I know that the US tyres have absolutely no grip with the road surface - they could do better than get some European spec tyres.

Direct knee jerk reaction of the Ford Exploder fiasco I reckon.

That's why Michelins seconds from Belgium and France get sent to the USA!!! (insider info from Michelin in Canada!)

Part of the problem is that Americans realistically expect to get anything from 50000 - 100,000 miles out of a set of tyres! They run super hard compounds. No kidding here, I have a friend in the USA who drives the same model Volvo S60 as me. I Get 25 -30k out of the fronts, his originals are currently at 50k and have lots left on them.
Trouble is, in the wet or at speed his car has bugger all grip compared to mine.

Also US road surfaces are crap they are either like glass or have bloody ridiculous cambers... at least in my limited experience.

IIRC, the piss funny thing about that is that Ford's workaround regarding the Exploder stability problem was to underinflate the tyres!! Nothing to do with numpty drivers not checking their type pressures... well, not as much as in most cases

I don't get it! I know that cars have had tyre pressure sensors for years, but are they talking about retro fitting sensors on vehicles that were never designed to use them, or to only make them compulsary on new cars (Surely utterly pointless!?). Maybe tyre manfacturers could build detectors into the tyre it self, which could send a signal to a light or buzzer inside the car.

I still think they'd be better off with a F*ckwit detector, which refuses to start the engine when a F*ckwit who doesn't know to check his tyres/oil etc gets into the drivers seat.

Send him to Hungary to take the test, there is a practical section where you have to demonstrate knowledge of changing wheels, topping up the oil, windscreen washers, radiator etc.

Don't worry he's not very computer literate. He's also a bit of a bolt on boy but its not a severe case! On the plus side he is a firm believer in pies
