I am considering the purchase of a used E63 AMG, around the 2010/11 age with 30-40k on. Budget is 40k max. Car will only do about 6k/year so fuel not a problem.

I used to own a C63 which I had to sell due to serious illness, but now recovered I have the hankering for another performance car, and I don't like BMW's !!

Anything in particular I need to look for - obviously I want full MB history etc.

Any assistance is appreciated.

With that sort of budget you will have multiple options open to you with a W212, possibly even a pre-facelift 5.5 Bi-Turbo though you'd be limited here on specs possibly.

However, I'd be looking at the 6.2 N/A engined version, with performance pack and as many toys as you can find. Dynamic seats with massage function, heated and ventilated, rear blind, panoramic roof (though I think they all had this option?) rear seat entertainment if you need this sort of thing, the list goes on...

I always start my searches with the Auto Trader website to get an insight into costs and availability, then Mercedes own site as they always tend to have reasonable stock. I would personally only buy directly from MB at this sort of price bracket, even though there are lots of other legitimate dealers out there, just that with a specialist vehicle like an AMG standard equipment tends to get listed as "fully loaded".

There are quite a few knocking about (just had a quick nosey round) mileages from 10k up to lots.

Good luck finding a good one, ideally in Palladium silver. smile

Another vote for the 6.2. It's not much thirstier than my 5.5 biturbo and is an unbelievable engine.

Obligatory PH random recommendation nothing near what the OP is looking for:

SL65 AMG.

I was going to get one but a business deal fell through leaving me short... So I got an SL55 instead....

I used to own an E55 AMG although I'm not familiar with the new ones, but have driven a couple of C63s, most recently a performance pack coupe that a family member owned.

The 55 feels much quicker, I would bet that it is. The 65 would murder it...

Do you need the room/seats of the E?

If I didn't need the seats, I would get the SL (and did).... If you need the seats, I would get an SL55, get a used diesel E class and grin about having 10k left over!

Sorry for taking it in another direction but you never mentioned needing the seats so thought its a good alternative idea!

As an aside, my SL55 gets a lot more attention than my 997 turbo, and more than a C63 would (unless you got it in white) if you like that kind of thing..... And after spending a few K on it, it's quicker than my 997 and sounds as good as a C63.

Is there anything to watch for on either the 6.2 or 5.5 ?

I have 2 to look at this week, one of each - similar age/mileage/spec and price.

On the 55, the intercooler pump going is inevetable. The way to check for this is to do a few full throttle runs and let the supercharger heat up.. if the pump is shot, then the car goes into limp mode - you'll feel like you're driving a 1.6. This can be fixed for about £200 at a specialist but it may give you some bargaining power.

Check brakes, they are costly.

Check the SBC suspension works - use the button to raise and lower it and see that it's all level.

Check the seats have full functionality.

If it has keyless go, check that this works and that that buttons on the door handles lock the car.

I can't think of any other common faults but I'm sure someone will be along to add to the list if I have forgotten anything!

Good luck - I preferred the engine in the 55 but the 63 has the facelift which still looks fresh, whereas the 55 looks slightly dated now IMO.

Tough choice. I think the 55 is easier to tune also if that's a plan for the future.
