O/T Contact preference service?

I've just received one of these stupid "hey, you've just won 5 zillion quid, phone us on 0898-60p per second to claim your prize" messages.

This sort of non-permission based marketing is a) illegal as far as I know and b) Pisses me right off.

I know there's a preference service you can register with that stops this sort of crap happening, how do I do this - does anyone know?

There certainly is:

Take a look and register here and this should put a stop to it. Mind you it will take a little while for this to take affect, so you might receive a few between registration and not receiving any further faxes like this.

The message was an SMS on my mobile phone, not an unwanted fax?

The "Telephone Preference Service" is a free service run I beleive by BT, to contact them call 0800 398893.
As far as I'm aware they only deal with domestic home land lines, but give them a go. They sorted out our problem, although it did take a week or two. Best of Luck, Simon.

If you find it let me know as just got one of those text messages saying ive won something

The Telephone Preference Service is run by the DMA (Direct Marketing Association) and I believe currently only applies to land lines.

However, if you have a look at the site:

www.tpsonline.org.uk

They have links to the Mail / Fax / Email Preference services and will probably be able to point you in the right direction regarding SMS messages.

Also, any SMS marketing message sent should give you the option to unsubscribe to any further messages !
