Type: Sd.Kfz.173 Jagdpanther
Extras used: None
Paints and colours used: Tamiya Dark Yellow, Tamiya Nato Green, thinned washes of Smoke and Mig Europe Dust. Added a few rust patches with Tamiya Red Brown

Had his one sitting around in its basecoat for a couple of years now, so thought I better finish such a simple kit.

I'd forgotten how small 1/76 is!

Brilliant job, looks so much larger without the paint to give scale.

For ages now, I have wanted one of these in 1/6th scale, RC with all the bells and whistles (or should that be engine sound and smoke?)

I believe it is. Here's one I did (about 35 years) earlier, still knocking around in my study this morning.

Yes I think it is the Matchbox one, as it comes with a little diorama base.

It definitely is then. Those original Matchbox kits were pretty nice - and they came with the diorama bases - which was a bit of a bonus.

Revell Germany inherited these kits when they acquired most of the Matchbox moulds.

I remember that the bases and the two-colour moulding were a big departure from Airfix when I first encountered them.

When they launched their kit range in 1972, Matchbox tried really hard to differentiate themselves from their main competitors in the UK market - which wasn't just Airfix. They also had to contend with Revell UK and FROG.

Keep an eye on the Armortek website, they make batches of these from time to time. 1/6 scale, steel and aluminium, complete with bangs and smoke if you want it. Not cheap, same price roughly as a small car if you get the whole works.

Current kits are the Mark IV and 25 pounder.

Yes it is the old Matchbox one - and if that's a recent moulding, those old moulds are holding up really well!

It's surprising that a tank made in such a low quantity has become so iconic. It's like a homologation special of the panzer world.
