Buying a car - wrong engine size sticker

I'm in the process of buying a new car and have found one I like - a 2012 Hyundai i30 1.4 CRDi.

All database lookups (including both Experian and HPI checks) are coming up with the engine capacity as 1.4. However the sticker inside the hinge of the driver's door is showing 1.6 as the engine capacity.

The chassis number matches against the registration and both Experiain and HPI checks are coming up clear.

Should this be ringing alarm bells? Is it possible the car simply has the wrong sticker?

It felt quicker than my 2005 C-Max 1.6 petrol to drive, especially when the turbo kicked in.

I'd actually prefer to buy a 1.6, as the MPG and CO2 figures are actually *better* than the 1.4, hence lower road tax. But all systems which look up the engine capacity are showing 1.4 - hence that is what I'll be paying for road tax and insurance. If it actually is a 1.6 then that could invalidate insurance.

Is there any other way I can definitively sort out which engine it has? For example does it look any different under the bonnet?

Probably just had a 1.4 sticker put on in the factory by error any nobody else picked up on it?

Either way if everything else says 1.4 just put a 1.4 sticker on it or remove it alltogether.

Stickers are often added in the UK and that is likely to be the incorrect element.

My old man bought a 320d Touring last year.

Went to pick it up with him, and looking round the car spotted a 318d badge on the back. 1001 checks later and it WAS a 320d, they'd just put the wrong badge on, and despite 6 months as a dealership car, no-one picked up on it.

Are you saying it's a 320d because it's 2000cc? Thought the 318d was just a lower power 2 litre motor anyway.

OP could the same apply to your car, is the 1.6 basically a higher power 1400 motor over a lesser power 1.4 1400cc - again like BMW 325d, 330d & 335d are all 3000cc but different hp outputs?

If they are physically different engines, rather than different tunes on the same engine, then it's likely that a dealer can tell the difference by distinguishing casting marks in the block.

318d is a 2l.... but this one IS a 320d. It was just incorrectly badged.
