Don't worry, I'm not interested in getting cash out on a credit card, but am I correct to assume that none of the supermarkets offer this facility, and that it's debit card only?

Correct.

Although the rumour is that Wilkinson and certain pubs will sometimes do it for you. I've Never tested it out though.

I always understood that it was just a way of getting rid of their banknotes, which incurs handling costs all the way down the line. For debit cards they will be paying a flat rate no matter how much you spend.

That's always been my understanding. Clever way of reducing their cash handling costs whilst appearing to be doing you a favour.
