Hi Rik

The back plate of my dash looks the same as yours. The black bit which the gauges fix into. But my front plate the bit that has the veneer on is plywood about 12mm thick. I gave one of the guys on here one that has been butchered in its past life. Can't remember who at the minute. but if I find out I'll ask him if he needs it still. I didn't realise their was a metal plate veneer option as well.

I remember somewhere else in this forum there was a comment that early wedges had real wood dashes (plywood) with walnut veneer, and later ones had a metal dash with the veneer glued to it.

from Wedg1e I think ? not sure.

My '86 wedges had the plywood and the '89 400SX has metal with veneer stuck on (then the metal rusts underneath and it all starts to go pear-shaped.....)

Well it would have been an advance if they'd used a stainless steel plate! Hence mine is off right now for a refurb.

Yeah, like other things what is described as an "advance" is actually a step backwards.

I remember the advice from somewhere to the effect that "wood veneers on a metal plate never last, as they can't handle the moisture changes - use plastic instead."

If you look at the outdoor grade plywoods (if they still exist, haven't been in Uk for 20 years) they can come up wonderfully just with a sand and several coats of varnish. Used this in kit car dashes. The outdoor grades used to be plywood with a top hardwood layer....so is just like a veneer in its own way.

Solid wood would be nice...There are tons of different woods..Some have a wonderful grains...I guess the backplate was so that it could be re-veneered in the future..Plastic backing might be the answer and would be a permanent solution..

Mine lasted 22 years on the car, so im not that worried ... the £300 I spent last year on the refurbishment is money well spent if it lasts another 22 Years.

Actually, my wood wasnt that bad, but it had a single split in the middle of the dash and I wanted it done.
