Caterham: Not for sale!

Official statement unequivocally quashes rumours

A few of you weren't too impressed that our Caterham news yesterday was focused on a single-seater Seven rather than the Tony Fernandes' rumoured sale of the company. Fair enough, but when dealing with something potentially so significant we prefer to have something official.

Therefore here is Caterham's clarification, word for word, that the Group is not for sale. It is searching for investment to continue with its model development including the AeroSeven project however. With that cleared up we can return to eagerly anticipating future Caterham projects, and loving the current ones for that matter.

Full statement here:

Despite press rumours to the contrary, Caterham Group is not for sale.

The reports circulating this weekend are factually incorrect.

It is, however, true that the Group is actively searching for additional investment as it seeks to fulfil ambitious plans to develop.

The shareholders of the Group, co-Chairmen Tony Fernandes and Datuk Kamarudin Meranun, remain wholly committed to the Caterham brand.

Fernandes confirmed: "The Caterham Group is not for sale. We love what we build and we are always looking for further investment. This is no different to how we started AirAsia. Yes, we are constantly challenging ourselves and making decisions on everything from the structure to projects within the Group. That is normal business. That does not mean we are selling."

They have two problems: Replacing Ansar Ali and Mark Edwards. Caterham could have been building a car in the shape of the Zenos if it wasn't for these two gentlemen leaving the brand. This would have been 'progress'.

If I were in the industry, I would not wish to invest in a company stuck with one key model: the 7, unless they were able to come up with a persuasive model development plan, and I don't see their current proposal as being one...

Also worth pointing out that instead of wasting precious investment funds by funneling this in a failed F1 venture, they could have been better placed in road car product development.

Interesting, my opening comment to this article seems to have disappeared...

Any of the Mods able/willing to divulge why?
It hasn't - it's in the duplicate thread over here.

Unfortunately the ability to merge threads seems to be as reliable as a Caterham K Series starter motor at the moment .... wink

ETA: looks like the merge has worked, somehow, and your post is now in this thread. smile and confused

It says that "Caterham Group" is not for sale. It doesn't say that the Caterham F1 team is not for sale, nor does it say that Caterham Cars is not for sale.

I have nothing constructive to add but I really want to build a Caterham 7 one day.

So it's not "for sale" they are looking for "investment"

Shall we start a book on how much equity the new "investor" will want? I'll go for 100%...

You would perhaps prefer the website to report unsubstantiated rumours?

My issue was more to do with the tone at the start of the article. PistonHeads has its own prerogative to publish articles, but this simply dismisses the views of those that make this website - IMO at least - more diverse than other websites.

Just my 2p worth and I will step off my soapbox to allow the thread to go back on-topic soapbox

How do you explain burnouts then? biggrin
Fernandes says in the statement that they are looking for investment so that's probably why a rumour started that Caterham may be sold. I had no idea there was even a rumour until now.

Can someone explain to me whatever happened to Ansar Ali and the initial Fernandes' plans for Caterham future, as read in most motoring media back a few years ago?

Short and daft version
AAs original buyout plan was a bit of a washout
Until...
He stumbled upon the idea of a great buyer to make the investors their money.
AA and TF then fell out after the sale
TF told AA to sling his hook.

And then they put an accountant in charge who thought he coud do better than the previous "parts bin special" management.

Really?

I find it amazing that there wasn't some kind of clause in Ali's contract to prevent him designing and selling a competitive lightweight sportscar.
All the better for us I guess

Didn't Caterham suddenly take on lots of ex-Lotus employees to work on the new vehicles about 2 years ago...?? Is there a worrying trend, of the same people developing cars which dont ever see production and the company suddenly running into trouble..? Hope that Caterham don't "do a Lotus"

Yours for £1, Sir.

We'd just like you to sign here to take over full liability for ££££million of debt plus all liabilities to the workforce.

Good, I wish them well. I've owned three and enjoyed them all.

Slightly O/T, are they selling any 620R customer cars? Haven't seen any photos on the net, clips on youtube or s/h sales?
