Worth Filling Up with Tesco 99 Once in a While?
Discussion
Quick question; whilst for everyday use there is no point in putting 99 RON in my car (2000 Vectra 1.8), I once heard that it's worth putting one tank full of "super petrol" through the engine once every few months or so to "help clean the inside of the engine". I am doubtful but what does the infinite wisdom of PH think?
I would consider Shell VPower if you want to clean the engine - it contains decent detergent package allegedly, the extra RON probably won't make any immediate economy or power benefit though on your engine (ECU won't advance the timing to use the extra RON), but you might just get some benefit from the detergents though cleaning dirt away. How clean your injectors and engine are inside is anyone's guess, so you might benefit from a dose of higher detergent fuel, but if it's already clean, then maybe not.
A tank of standard fuel from BP or Shell every so often could be a good middle ground if you currently run supermarket, not much price penalty unlike if you were going to a high RON fuel, and the standard BP or Shell fuel should have a decent detergent package.
Worth a try I think if only to satisfy your own curiousity, if trying some other fuel makes no difference, then go back to what you were using.
Not quite the same subject I know, but I have noticed quite big differences between Diesel fuels, most are similar, but the odd one is dire in my car (Sainsburys City Diesel, smoky and low power, poor mpg, tried it about 5 times now), and some are definitely better (BP Ultimate, more mpg, bit more power, but expensive). VPower is the cleanest Diesel I know of, but has no fuel economy benefit and is expensive.

You might be better off trying REDEX...

Not tried it yet personally but the reviews on Halfords etc look very promising..
