What mods can I do to my soon to be Discovery 3 that don't cost a fortune?
It is to be used for lanes and pay & play as well as normal road use.

Frankly... Learn how to drive it.

Once you know how to drive it, you'll understand and know what 'mods' will work for you.

Echo the above.
They are hugely capable out the box, learn how to use the car, how the TR works, when it's best to switch off DSC and how to get the best from the TC system.

My own car has nothing more than a set of off road tyres and some rock/tree sliders.
I have removed the front bumper trim and replaced it with a metal guard that allows quick access to the front recovery point and also extra protection to the radiator area.
With that, I can do 90% of what my Defender driving mates can do.

Before adding mods, I would make sure it's mechanically sound first, they are heavy cars and the bushes take a pounding.

Engine and gearbox bash plates? They are fairly pricey at £1k for a complete set. You can also get guard kits for the lower suspension arms and maybe the rear diff too.

Decent tyres are obviously a must. Maybe something like the General Grabber AT2s?

As per usual, you can also get the winch kit and a snorkel, but those are permanent vehicle alterations which you might want to leave out if this is your first foray into off roading.

I may also be taking the plunge into D3 ownership towards the end of the year....

So tyres, tree sliders and a guard for the front under side. It's a start. Not sure about fitting the winch off my old D2 at the moment.

It's not my first time off road but next time will be with this car and first in an auto.
Recovery points will be first on the list. This car won't get to go in some of the mad placer the old one did.
Snorkel and rear ladder are already on the list.

Rock crawl, off road height and my mate acting as my spotter for getting up.
Like I said, hugely capable as standard! They also have a far better turning circle than older LRs so they are more agile than the size would suggest.

For a winch, you need a 9500lb or more as they are heavy buggers!
You can either fit it out front like the G4 D3s but the kit costs a lot, or have it hidden behind the front bumper, cheaper but still over £200 for the set up.
Safari snorkel is £275 plus delivery, I fancy one but life keeps getting in the way of car spending.

I know what what you mean.
I just about have enough money to buy a treat the a bill comes in out of the blue.
Mod suggestions not limited to off road.

Depending on the model you're getting, an upgraded bluetooth control module and satnav on the move/off road nav would be a cheap-ish upgrade at c. £120 for them both. That was the 1st thing I changed when I got my 07 SE, and I use one or the other every trip. A spare wheel protector would also be a good and cheap mod at £80 IIRC, as certain members of society like to liberate Disco spare wheels (RLD/Ray's a member on Disco3.co.uk and makes them to order).

I've also just upgraded my compressor to the latest D4 model, but that wasn't by choice rolleyes

ETA a great free mod is the one that stops the annoying bing when you don't have your seatbelt on! Light is still on the dash, just no bings.

CB can be roof mounted on a bracket that goes in the roof rail. £20 got me one, £9 for an ariel.
A mate has twin ariels and the CB mounted under the dash against the centre console.
Works very well.

Have you bought a D3 yet?

They honestly don't need much... If at all! Also, be wary about how much kit you stick to it cos they're already a VERY heavy car. It's wouldn't take much effort before you're over 3t!!!

IMO - Unless you have a requirements, don't bother with the winch. It's just more weight and it'll only pull you forwards. Get a hand winch.

The recovery points on the D3 are already man enough, just make sure you can get to them!

CB - Depending on your rig, the top cubby box makes a good location. Remote speaker mounted on the top and the fist mike can either live in the cubby when not in use and/or mounted on the console.

Just asking as knowing if it's a petrol/diesel. Manual/auto. What trim level can give us an idea for what starter mods to look for.

What's the age and mileage as well.

Ok, it's due a cam belt change this year.
Change the oil pump at the same time, the casing has an issue where it will break at the tensioner and ruin your engine.

Do that before any mods!!

After that, you can unlock the sat nav on the move, 3 flash indicators, clock on dash, you can have a light on the fails to say your headlights are on. Get clock on the dash in beside the mpg readings.

HSE has all the toys so it's now bolt on stuff.

Check out disco3.co.uk for loads of info for them. smile

Belt service is being done now before I get it. What does unlocking the sat nag on the move do?
