Just double checking really because I read that in the US it's not allowed to fit an older engine into a car.

Also, what will the DVLA want from me when I tell them the engine's been replaced? Just the new engine number? It's from a car that I declared as scrapped to DVLA, and darn I can't find the receipt for the donor car.

Fit engine, notify DVLA of engine no change etc.

They should only cry if the engine is a different size, and claim they want some paper trail.

Paper is cheap, printers are cheap. DVLA are bureaucratic ballbags who just wants bits of paper.

Yes the engine can be older.
DVLA will want a receipt or the donor V5. How long did you own the donor? If you had it a while then just the reg could work.
They will want an engineers report that the engine is fitted. Ask your local MOT station to do just write an invoice for the inspection and confirming the engine number on the invoice. Last one charged me a tenner.

I was the registered keeper of the donor vehicle for a couple of months. Alright, enough worrying. I'll see what they say when it comes to doing the swap. I want to stay above board this time biggrin It's a long term project so I can jump their hoops.

I once wrote a letter to Ford's Technical Department, and they wrote a letter back explaining the "main" differences between a mk2 fiesta 1.1 popular car derived van, and a mk2 1.1 pop hatch. They also explained that they couldn't agree that with rear windows, seats and seatbelts, that it was now a hatchback and not a van, but they did say that from a safety point of view, my insurance company should be happy.

I suggest you contact them with the 2 engine numbers, and ask them to confirm in writing that they are completely the same, or if not what the detail differences are.

As far as an Engineers report for the DVLA. I'm happy to do a report, back by £1M professional indemnity insurance on ltd company headed notepaper, with various get out riders where I can't be held responsible for anything about the quality of the mechanicing. .

I will confirm that the new engine is engine number XYZetc, but I'm not sure the best way to confirm the size, as without taking off the head, you can't measure the bore.

Maybe, get one piston to TDC, fill with oil. Take piston to BDC, and pippet oil in to the same level and multiple the cc of oil by 4. and then pump the oil out again ?

I have bought, sold and modified hundreds of cars over the last 20+yrs - never told the DVLA about engine numbers.

I have notified (or at least tried to) when I fitted a larger engine - it meant paying more tax yet they wanted a huge amount of paperwork so I never bothered replying and kept paying the lessor tax.

None ever looks or cares - they are meddling numpties best not to get them involved.

I'm all game for breaking the rules, I do it every day of my life, but this is a long term project so no harm in jumping through their hoops. I've seen VOSA pulling over vehicles near Hanger Lane about six times now, so I'd rather have peace of mind if I'm investing a years work into the car.

I telephoned the DVLA and explained my situation. They said that even though the donor car has been scrapped they will have the engine number on record and as it's the same size engine there won't be any problems. I mentioned that people have warned me that there will be problems, and they said that's only if the engine size changes. Anyway, we'll see when I come to do it.
