hi, a couple weeks ago i was debating between the ford focus 1.6 ecoboost or the VW golf 1.4 GT

but after looking on the internet, i cant stop seeing horror stories about the VW and frankly its put me off, SO, my question is, as far as running costs go, how significant is the difference between the golf GTI and the GT, ive noticed for around the same price i could get a decent GTI and insurance wouldnt kill me, i saw a post on another forum saying the GTI isnt THAT much more expensive to run, and its engine isnt as complicated as the 1.4 GT, can anyone confirm this?

also, is the vauxhall astra 1.6 180 bhp a nice car? they seem incredibly cheap! could get one with 10-20k miles on and stil have change left over within my budget

any help would be appreciated!

Good to see you've been doing some man maths since your last thread biggrin

Can't say about the golf however did recently use an astra that I'm pretty sure was a 1.6 (not sure exactly which engine as it was a hire care and I didn't really care but didn't feel like 180 bhp). Not a bad car and went fairly well, however it wasn't exciting for reasons that I struggle to put my finger on. It's as if while trying to make it more than the sum of its parts Vauxhall had a digit missing on their calculator.

That said, there was nothing bad about it so if it's got a decent amount of power for the money it would certainly be worth a test drive as the extra shove may be worth it.
