Porsche owners who bought new, then discovered air cooled?
Discussion
Reading through some old posts, I wondered how many people like me there were around?
I was fortunate to b around some meaty stuff when I was a kid, a few 911 turbo's, Ferrari's, 928's 964's etc.
When I was able to afford a 911, I just went and bought a just out new 997S thinking the older stuff was maybe slow, smelly, unreliable, a money pit so on.
On arrival, the 997 was the most disappointing car I had ever owned, with a host of problems the dealer could hardly be bothered to deal with, and I started thinking the 'never meet your hero' thought. Maybe I was expecting more, the mighty 911 built up in my mind as a pure drivers car, for the hairy chested.
What I actually had was a slow, quiet comfortable easy to drive car that leaked when I washed it, and plummeting in value quicker than I could earn it.
A drive in my friends newly acquired 964 C2 opened my eyes to sound, feel, excitement and handling. THIS was what I had expected a 911 to be!!
Since then I have not looked forward, an have a bond with the earlier cars that will stay with me probably for life.
A bit like olives, Pink Floyd and real ale, the cars may be an acquired taste, but grab hold with their character like no other.
Is it just me that has gone down this road? Anyone else discovered the joys of the earlier cars through the disappointment of the new?
And reading the posts on 'how is this car worth so much' re the air cooled stuff, maybe a lot of other people have worked it out too?

I started a good few years back with a 930 turbo at the age of 23. 15 years on I bought a 997s and knew after not long I wanted another aircooled. Binned the 997 for a 993 C4 then went into 997 gt3 and then a 964 C2 but now own a 996 RS and another 964 but this time LHD as I wanted a real 'authentic' old aircooled 911.
So in answer to your question I love em all but if its water cooled it has to be a GT car that has that hardcore feel. 964's seem to have all you want in an aircooled car but the right bits that done make it a pig to drive

Thank you for your replies!
In defence of the new stuff, I drove my first GT3 RS last week and was blown away.
A full on 997 car with £20k of cup car bits, and loved it.
But it was really nuggety on the road, and only made sense pressing on in a manner that would instantly loose your licence if caught!
Opened my eyes though!
Just the early cars give you the sensations at sensible speeds, and without having to ring the neck out of the engine from 6000-8500 rpm to get the best out of it.
I have got to get my bum into a gt2 rs!

You know what, you could of posted this in any marque forum on here, yes there will always be an argument, but it will always be relative. If you venture out of this bubble of a forum, somewhere in the Triumph TR7 forum there will be a bloke with a beard saying that it is a purer car than the TR8 because there is less weight in the nose & it handles better so it will eat your 8 in the bends, & even if it is true, HGAF?

I would pick the TR8 any day. A TR4 don't pull the skin off a rice pudding!
I am interested in other peoples journeys into Porsche ownership.
If your into beards and triumphs, and DGAF, why bother letting us all know?
Because most people want the latest & greatest, just because you have been enlightened & will soon be a God (complete with beard) it does not make you righteous (to the majority of Porsche buyers)I am interested in other peoples journeys into Porsche ownership.

Oh & it was 7 V's 8, no one mentioned the 4, but I rather fancy a 4A if your offering.

I think, you'll find this happens to virtually every boy who was in to cars as a kid then has the money to realise the dream, it don't make you right though.

GT2 RS now you're talking would suggest a serious handful.
