I have rust bubbling through the paint on the rear arches / sills of my M5, and on one of the rear quarters just above the bumper.

I know the best way would be to cut it out and replace with good metal, but I am hoping to avoid that. Is there an alternative that will give a good result, and the rust wont come back so / come back so soon?

honesy no not really ..if there was a short cut that worked people wouldnt cut and weld it

can probably clean it up and make it last a year

I guess im looking at a big bill for that. 3 bits of rust, quite small bits as well.

Only way to find out is to try a decent body shop. There are some really good body men about. Cutting out the rust and replacing with new metal and rustproofing that area before refinishing. Expensive yes, but this s the only long term solution. I hope the repair produces the results you want.

Your best bet is to try Bilt Hamber Deox gel. It's a rust eater/converter.

Thanks, I am going to use that, and then give the areas I paint a blow over, just to keep it looking tidyish. Next year I will have the metal removed and replaced with good steel and then get the full car resprayed.

I dont think this stuff is a permanent solution as the rot tends to start at the back of the body panel.

Ordered it - cheaper direct than it is from other suppliers!

if its a scab thats started from outside then the bilt hamber will clean it up well ..including making holes in it if its gone thin

if the rust has come from inside out then it wont help alot as you cant reach the festering areas

The scab is on the outside, I havent seen the back, and I cannot get behind the sill to see / feel for rust there. I believe the rear arches rust is surface. I'll know more next weekend when I take to it.

Should I rub it down with wet and dry, or get something else on it, like a wire brush head on my cordless?

Scabs are on both sides of the arch, but the metal "feels" solid.

I usually scrape all the loose rust bubbles off first and get to some kind of solid metal or the rust product will just cling to the surface.

wire wheel all the paint and loose rust off , apply the deox gel and cover with some cling film , once its gone brown keep wiping it off and adding more until theres no brown pits at all , if its still sound once all the rust is gone its got a chance of lasting a while

I need it to last about a year, then it'll be getting the rust cut out and new metal put in.

I'll do as recommended.

while your at it I would get the backs of the arches cleaned up(not sure if it has a plastic liner on these?) and either painted or protected as that's where it tends to start.
