There are 70 surviving S1 FHC cars in black on the xkedata website - http://www.xkedata.com/cars/?e=2

As they have 23% of all S1 cars made on there, it suggest there were around 70/.22 = c320 originally built in black.

Is that close enough for you?

The repeated messages were because there was a glitch with my system - it took 3attempts before an edit I made was showing on PH. No idea why it posted the edit three times though.

Well, there are statistics and then there is rubbish. According to the JDC there are 450 3.8 RHD FHC known to exist. Then you look at their known LHD 3.8 FHC's and you have another 225, so ignoring the later 4.2 cars from 1964 on we are already at 675 cars. Then they have around 400 RHD 4.2's and I can't be bothered to do a quick calculation of the LHD cars. By my calculation, the JDC know of about 70% of the early 3.8 RHD cars (quite a lot considering) and I am not sure of the percentage of the LHD cars but fat less it would be safe to say, but the above figures quoted are way out. Anyway, if it was black then, is it black now or like so many red or silver blue? I can though say that a quick scan of the first 100 RHD 3.8 FHC cars shows but three in black.

Probably THE Coolest color for a Series 1 ( or 2 ) FHC.

Check out " Danger Diabolik " made in 1968, in Italy, it stars John Phillip Law and the Beautiful, sadly Late Marissa Mell.
A very underrated and little known film, its got to be the E Types finest film performance. At least 2 black Es were used, the main car being a (pre early 63) Alloy dash car.

Black was never a popular exterior E color in Britain, but the Americans liked it. Generally they had a Red interior, but magnolia was also fitted.
I have seen a few.
In circa 1997, i very nearly bought one of the last 3.8 Coupes built, it was an unbelievably original car, incomplete and dismantled, but still in its factory black, with a red interior. I put the details on XKE Data. A horse trader sadly beat me to this one.
Another one i almost bought, around the same time from a Dealer, had been painted gold, but was originally factory black.

George Brough bought a 62 Coupe new in Black, the Registration number was GB 1001 i believe.
Another very original early 4.2 car for sale in the States recently, was also black with red.

I've reread my post and find no grammatical fault. As I read what is written, it indicates three were black. If you read otherwise, please explain.

Simply Gorgeous.........Isnt it.

I photographed this 66 in either 2010, or early 2011. Supplied new to Paris, Pierre must have cut a cool dash in this. However, it was Originally supplied in Opalescent Silver Grey, with Red.

It is grammatically correct. However, it is an ambiguous statement that can be given either interpretation. "But only three were black." "All but three were black." In context the meaning was clear.

Low drag - are you quoting figures for the UK only, or worldwide? The xkedata site purports to have the worldwide figures, which is where the big discrepancies are with the figures you used (compared to mine).

The data is only as good as the data uploaded by owners, so can only be used as an indication, but should be fairly good. You can select original or current colour on the site, which improves the figures.

The database gives 70 surviving S1 FHC built in black and known to xkedata, which is where my extrapolation came from.

All statistics need to be handled carefully, but are not 'rubbish'!

I am quoting from the E-type register directory, which gives chassis number, colour and where known registration details. It is available from the E-type register for about £10 I believe. The last book (it comes out every five years) for example shows 51 S1 RHD coupés from 1961 alone, and 452 RHD S1 3.8 coupés in all, from 860001 to 861794. Then you have LHD S1 3.8 and then you have all the 4.2's so yes, I am quoting from the register of known cars. I quite often add to the knowledge myself when I find cars for sale on the internet that aren't known to the club. For example, this car isn't on the register so there's another one for the next book:-

http://www.classiccarsforsale.co.uk/car-advert/jag...

Chassis #55. I keep this book on my desk at all times to compare when I an researching.

ONE thing is for certain and that is that Black, wasnt a common option, certainly Not in England. The start of the swinging sixties, in Britain, Black was seen as old and dull, many cars were still Black and Black cars were everywhere. Stateside however, a Black XKE was a cool car.

The Only way of being certain re which car was which color, would be for someone to trawl through the Sales Ledger that a Heritage Cert is compiled from.

Low drag - that is interesting. I hadn't come across the directory before this. I can't find any links to it (just the registration form); do you have to be a member of the JDC to buy one?

The big difference between the directory and xkeregister is the number of cars recorded - xkedata has 16,000 and the directory 6,000. I presume that this is because xkedata has more American entries?

Out of interest - is my car listed in the directory? 1S52113BW - see http://www.xkedata.com/cars/detail/?car=1S52113BW ?
