Quick question... I wouldn't mind getting a French pay as you go SIM card for whilst I'm over there as I don't really fancy getting back and finding I've spent £500 on data roaming charges.

Is there any particular network that anyone would recommend for the Le Mans area?

Super U offer a good choice and be your best bet but make sure you have your passport\driving licence as all cards have to be registered.

Stupid question... I'm assuming Super U is a supermarket? (rather than a network).

Yes you are correct its supermarket. One at Arnage and a bigger one at Ecommoy with a much better choice its on the left of the main store selling all electrical products, laptops, TV's, phones and sim cards.

If you're on Vodafone in the UK, for 2 quid a day while in France you can take your home tariff with you.
