"Whining sound" below 2,000 revs. 997 C2S
Discussion
I've just returned from a holiday in the Highlands and drove there in my 997 C2S.
On the way up there I noticed a strange whining sound after we'd been driving for around 6 hours. We stopped for a break shortly afterwards and when I got back in the car it seemed to have stopped so tried to think nothing more about it.
Anyway, on the way home after about 4 hours of driving I noticed this noise reappeared. This time I was able to diagnose it better to see when it occurred. I came to the conclusion that it occurred when revs dipped below 2,000 and happens in any gear. My first worry was it is a gearbox thing but the fact that it's happening in all gears made me think this might not be the case (although I'm not a mechanic so could be completely wrong).
Since I've returned home I haven't heard the noise again, which suggests it only occurs when the car is hot/had extended use (although I haven't had chance to test this on a mid-range journey yet).
The noise isn't incredibly loud but is noticeable and is something new that I haven't heard before. I'm a sufferer of Porsche paranoia so am always listening for unusual sounds.
Does anyone have any theories on what this might be?
As a footnote, I'm sadly considering getting rid of my car. The paranoia is spoiling the experience to be honest and after having had it for just over a year I feel like if I get rid of it now I might dodge the bullet of what seems like an inevitable big bill (although admittedly this may never come). I've probably spent over 2k on various niggles so far and am really worried about some of the dreaded engine issues. This latest thing could be the nail in the coffin!

Mine made a similar noise which ended up being an aux. belt tensioner bearing, £450 later all was well....
I am sadly with you regards to the sale of your car, never have I been so stressed about owning a car and potential problems, in 18 months and 6000 miles; 6x coil pack, gear lever linkage, aux. belt, clutch, Full Engine REBUILD, aircon condenser, electric seat switch, DME sensor, 5 liter of top up oil, rear seat base leather delaminating......
Fantastic engineering on a 36,000 mile car!
Glad to have washed my hands with it, happily driving an M3 now, I never worry about over revving the damn thing, I don't care if I stand on the brakes hard to damage the PCCBs, and I never stress when it goes in for a service. Back to enjoy driving the car rather than leaving it under the car cover in the garage!
I will in time be tempted in the new Cayman GTS in the near future though...

Just a thought but next time it happens just turn off the aircon and see if the whine stops. Mine has an odd sort of groan from time to time and we traced it to the aircon compressor. My indie says they do make a noise sometimes but its working fine
Interesting… will try that. Thank you!scarebus said:

Thank you... will bear that in mind if it's not the aircon.I am sadly with you regards to the sale of your car, never have I been so stressed about owning a car and potential problems, in 18 months and 6000 miles; 6x coil pack, gear lever linkage, aux. belt, clutch, Full Engine REBUILD, aircon condenser, electric seat switch, DME sensor, 5 liter of top up oil, rear seat base leather delaminating......

Wow, so you have been stung =( In 12 months or so I've had aircon condensers, aircon o-ring, clutch, flywheel & slave cylinder, gear lever linkage and Plug/coil pack heat shields. Some of those things being more costly than others! I am also thinking of heading back to BMW.
