Hi,

Myself and Smemley have driven up from Sussex to Glasgow in our Sevens (partly because of work and partly because we can) and are on the lookout for some decent roads/routes to drive over the next few weeks. We are also doing the track evenings at Knockhill to stretch the legs a bit.

Does anyone have any suggestions for good roads? The A82 has been highlighted as a good/treacherous road from Loch Lomond upwards, anything else?

Any details of local 7 meets would also be cool as it would be nice to catch up with the local contingent at least once whilst we're up this way.

I posted on Blatchat a week or so ago but there are either no Scots on there or no decent roads to reply about! smile

Cheers.

There are loads of good roads to the north of Glasgow - the Dukes Pass A821 is a good starting point, but basically if you just avoid the main roads and head for high ground and you're bound to find some. Closer to glasgow the Crow road over the Campsie Fells is worth a blat (B822 and turn right to Carron reservior B818). The only issues may be the state of repair of some of roads.

Not really enough of us up here to to have a club as such but there is a Borders group that meet most months. Two forums worth a look at: http://www.scottishelises.com/phpbb/

Knockhill is where most meet up - usually at the independently organised events such as SIDC and TrackScotland. IMHO the Knockhill events tend to be a little more Hot Hatch orientated and you may find the etiquette less welcoming. But if the weather is good, it will still be fun.

Enjoy . . .

Awesome, thanks chaps.

If either of you are blatting around near Erskine then let me know as we're stationed near Bishopton currently. We could catch up for a pint.

From Glasgow head south on the M74 and down the Dalveen pass onto the A76 into Dumfries then along the A75 to Newton Stewart and up to New Galloway then head north to Ayr. When at Ayr take the A70 west taking you back to the M74. Good hundred or so miles of stunning scenery mostly quiet roads with good turns for a 7. I live in the area and regularly take my 7 a wee run on these roads. Just watch for unmarked cars on the A75.

On the A75 pop into kirkcudbright and go to polar bites at the harbour for fish n chips. Fish straight off the boat and a treat. There are some excellent b roads there from Dumfries to gatehouse of fleet if you look at a map which gets you off the A75. In Dumfries you could take the coast road through new Abbey dalbeattie into kirkcudbright. Kipford near dalbeattie is quite picturesque also.

Happy blatting

Another vote for the Dukes Pass from me. Get up really early so you can run it both directions before the cyclists and buses get there - vid

Alternatively, head to Oban for lunch via the A83/A816 then loop back on the A85.
