2005 mondeo steering colum

Hi.my 2005 MONDEO tdci has an issue with the steering wheel. When driving straight the wheel is about 40 degrees off centre. I took the steering wheel of expecting to find a splined shaft so I could just realign the wheel but it's a hexagonal shaft so no matter how I re position the wheel it will still be squint. The tracking and alignment of the front wheels is fine. Is ther a way to adjust the steering wheel alignment at the point where the steering colum connects to the steering rack. If it can then any suggestions as to how I would do this would be appreciated.
