So a while back I noticed that gearbox oil was leaking from the right side oil seal. I replaced it a few monts ago but it hasn't really helped. While it was apart I noticed the driveshaft end had a coating that was peeling off. I'm thinking maybe this could cause it? The driveshaft was replaced before I bought it so maybe it had a crappy refurbished one put in. You can see in the picture how the coating has worn away and is flaky where it meets the oil seal. Car is a 1.1 peugeot 106 btw.
Any help appreciated!

Look almost like a paint or a protective coating to stop rusting in storage.
Certainly won't help sealing & all the driveshafts I've done on Pugs (205 & 306s)have been nice & shiny on the sealing areas.
Try removing it with thinners or similar. If that doesn't work then try polishing with solvol or similar.

As already said clean that off with a solvent or polish with emery cloth, be very careful when putting the shaft back in that you dont touch the seal lip with the splines, thats what cuts the seals and causes leaks.

Ok, i'll try that when I get the time. Might as well put on another seal for what it's worth. Probably not going to be able to fix it outide this weekend though, too rainy.

Right, i'm in the middle of the job and I've got a new seal, only i'm not sure which way to put it in. I thought it goes flat side out, but there's an arrow showing rotation direction on the other side which shows to put it in the other way round. I want to be sure before putting it in, so what should i do?

It should be flat side out, and fairly obvious when you look at it.

If the rotation is wrong, you've bought the seal for the opposite side.

IIRC all the seals I've fitted have the spring on the side that you want the fluid to stay in. (Or flat side out as ST says)
On the 205/306s I don't recall seeing a directional arrow on the seals to indicate shaft rotation direction so that's a new one on me - I never had any leakage issues.
Have you got a manual for the car?

I had to make a decision before i got a reply, so I put it in flat side out. I'm glad it is the correct way, but the arrow gave some confusion... I checked the parts manufacturers online catalogue and the seal was definitely the right one.

Also white spirit got the paint off in the end, now i'll have to wait a while to see if it worked.

As for manuals I have a haynes manual but they're not always that useful.
