Put a deposit down on a 2011 GTR Premium Edition but now having MASSIVE problems getting insured

The car is standard except from a sports exhaust

I am 32, clean license which I've had for 9 years and live in a nice postcode

Main reasons nobody will touch me;

  • I have 5 years NCB but on my trade policy only - BUT I am allowed to drive and own private vehicles on the policy and have been doing so for years now. Never had a claim
  • I don't have any previous long term ownership history of fast/high performance vehicles
If anybody can help me or knows of any insurance company that can I would be very grateful

Have already tried Admiral, Bell, Elephant, Adrian Flux, Bond Lovis, Aviva, Confused.com and GoCompare

Many thanks

And this, kids, is why you should check insurance before placing a deposit. wink

Tried sky insurance? They do modified and performance cars.

If you haven't already, try Pace Ward, I was in the same boat as you a few years ago, I'm still with them and they're very competitive.

It was only a 250 deposit so it's not the end of the world on that front, however i was genuinely looking forward to owning/experiencing the car so would be a shame if it didn't happen

I haven't tried A-Plan or Sky yet but they are on my list. Just tried Competition Car Insurance and am waiting on a reply back from them tomorrow - hopefully

I used both CCI and sky for mine with no probs. I was 30 at the time, 6 points and 4 years ncb I think.

Premium wasn't much north of a grand.

Also post on gtr.co.UK. helpful bunch on there.

There's a chap on Scoobynet who posts as MoleyWRX, specializes in insurance for Jap cars. Always did me a great deal when I owned Jap cars.

you should not have a problem getting insured on anything at 32

Are you being declined quotes or just getting higher than expected quotes?

Have you contacted any of the insurers to ask why they are declining or quoting high?

1 possible issue is the value, it's an expensive car even a 4 year old one, many of the cheap insurers may not be able to quote you, or at least not offer their usual bargain basement rates, because they know you wouldn't be happy with their offer of £2500 in argos vouchers and a bucket of chicken after a total loss.
And on the matter of value, what sort of value are you putting in? if you seem to have massively over valued the car, then many insurers will not quote you.
http://www.confused.com/car-valuation
check what it says here, if it does not agree with what you are paying and are putting on the quotes, then it could be a reason, even if you are paying a lot more for the car you could consider putting the market value and taking out gap insurance for the short fall.

Hi Ging

I listed everything as it should be when applying for quotes, for example the car is prob worth 50k but I have agreed a sale on 47.5k so that is the value I listed. I have tried using confused.com and gocompare but no luck at all, I even tried using a specialist that one of my clients has his McLaren P1 and CCC insured with and he let me down too. From what these guys are telling me about 8 out of 10 insurers are just saying no and the rest are coming back with telephone numbers. I think it's absolutely insane.

I have even offered for them to put a big excess on my policy and said that i would be willing to comeplete a few high performance driving courses but they're still being idiots about it.

Can you not just add it to your policy as a private car?

No, tried to and they said a GTR is the only car they won't touch. Haha, now they decide to tell me. Don't you just love insurance companies

Have you tried any of the specialist insurance companies that cover kit cars. My Dax Cobra is insured by MSM 01279 870535 and although I am 61 they will add my son (22) to the policy for short periods and I find them very accommodating.

If they cannot help they may be able to suggest who can? Good luck!
