Posted both here and in classics to cover all the bases. It's insurance renewal time again, currently with Hagerty's insured as a modern classic. I've only managed to do about 300 miles last year, so don't mind restricted mileage. Prefer to insure against value as opposed to "market value" as should the worst happen we all know that Insurance market value is not even remotely similar to actual market value, so on that basis can anyone recommend who's best to talk too?

I went to Elephant, less than half the price of Direct line and a 1/4 of what Locktons quoted me.

If you go to a budget insurer, you'll get budget service should anything happen.

But if it is a 15 year old 10 grand car, then why pay top rate.

For the Gransport I was quoted about £700 from Flux and the like, around £500 from agreed value insurers, and £230 from Elephant/Admiral, who were happy as long as it was valued under £30k.

weird as I was with Admiral - who bumped me up to £700 when I moved. Shifted back to A-plan for £500, and got £85 breakdonw cover, home assist and recovery inc. europe biggrin

Why? How many actual underwriters are there behind all of these companies anyway?

Like any business the largest customer may get the best service and the risk is also spread more.

Locktons kept telling me too many 360 and California accidents drive up the risk I.e. Your price. Perhaps they need to take on more daily snotters!

Exact what Locktons told me, got a cracking rate on my 911 with them, but the 360 cant get decent rates on as to many people have crashed them.

I am with Brindle car insurance (competition car insurance) for the 360, which was 600 on renewal and was this for the past 3 years.
I think this is a great rate for my age and value of the car.

I have worked with insurance companies for a few years and there is a difference.
You need to go with someone who understands you car, after all, a super car or even a fast road car is less of a risk than the average daily driver.
One of the best risks is the 26-40 year old with a fast road car yet these are notoriously expensive to insure.

A bit slow in replying, as I was looking for the article, but basically the budget insurers have their panel of approved repairers and if you want to go elsewhere you have a problem. Many have a labour rate cap and will not pay the rates demanded by Franchised Ferrari/Maserati/Porsche dealers.

Aviva state quite clearly on page 13 of their T&Cs
http://www.aviva.co.uk/static/library/pdfs/motor/m...
that if you don't use their approved repairer, then you will pay an additional excess AND won't be entitled to a Courtesey Car. Last time I looked this extra excess was an additional £200.

If someone dents your door, do you want rush job of a bit of filler and a blow over of paint, or a new doorskin and respray? Genuine or pattern parts?

If there's potential damage to the steering, do you want a gneneric garage more used to turning over Mondeos to check the car out, or would you like someone with specialist experience of your type of vehicle to give it a clean bill of health?

Because if you want it to go to a main dealer, you might find yourself paying for it.

Do any of the main dealers do the work themselves? They'll go generally to someone local with a half reasonable reputation and hand your keys over! To think otherwise is a bit naive in my humble.

Probably true for bodywork, but I'd hope not for mechanicals.

Plus I'd be a lot more comfortable going back to Carrs with a quibble about a repair than a £30/hour insurance company place.

Yes it was bodywork I was referring to. You'd be unlikely to be claiming on your insurance for mechanical issues that obviously more warranty.

My understanding is that you have a legal right to use the repairer of your choice and they cannot force you to use their preferred repairers. I've been down this road twice and on both occasions I had to do the early leg work getting quotes but once done it was pretty straightforward.
Only difference was I had to pay the excess on collection and wait for settlement rather than not pay the excess upfront when using the preferred repairer.

Do you have a number? I went through to Aviva direct and they had no clue and quoted me a silly price. Locktons matched a low quote i got from Hiscox but its still over £1500 for one car!
