Hi all, had a problem last night the dash died and the battery light cam on but was still running for over 20mins driving home, I have sines joined the cables together in the 100amp fuse position and checked the dash instrument fuse which looks fine, while driving back the dials did flicker a couple of times, any ideas how to fix?

Was the 100 amp fuse blown? I have had that twice, but don't remember the red light coming on, and I definitely didn't lose the dash.
However, when my alternator was failing/failed I did have the red light on. It came on gradually and got brighter and brighter, but I covered about 80 miles with it on, though any rough running could easily have been the torrential downpour in which I was driving - it seemed to be down to about 6 cylinders by the time I got home.

If you have a multimeter, test the alternator output (the terminal is inside the plastic cowl on the back of the alternator, down one of the holes in the plastic). Check it first with the engine and ignition off, you should be able to see whatever is left in the battery (normally about 12.3 volts, yours might be a bit lower).
Get someone to start the car if it will start, voltage should jump to 13.5 or thereabouts if the alternator is ok, but stay at roughly the battery reading if not.

You say you "lost the dash". Do you mean the lights went off, or the instruments did too?

No dials, or fan but the fan under the dash works, all lights work except side lights. The battery and alternator were new just before I brought it a year ago, suppose that doesn't mean they are ok now. The 100amp fuse was not blown.

The dash lights flickered on you say, connection/ earth.
Pull the fuses and make sure there not corroded, give tthrm a clean maybe.
Battery light suggests low charging or again bad connections but I'm guessing!

Rover gauge shows main volts 13.5, not sure where this reading comes from?

Alternator ok then, could be a bad contact or earth as Classichims says

Any other ideas? I have check the other large fuse in the passenger foot well and that's fine, I have run the car a wiggled the leads I can see with a mirror in the car to see if the rev counter or anything cam to life but no luck there, the battery light seems to be staying of at the moment anyway.
