Can I insure a sorn car?

Hi all,

I'm on the verge of selling my car and as such the insurance will be cancelled. However being a young chap I don't wanna lose my 2 years NCD. I have my project car in the garage which is sorned, waiting to be put back on the road. Can I transfer my insurance to the SORN car then put it back on the road in my own time?

Yes. I sorn my convertible for a few months every year but insurance remains. The insurance co don't care less chance of you crashing it!

NCB will remain valid for two years after a policy is cancelled. Just make sure you obtain proof from the broker/insurer when you cancel the policy.

If you couldn't, you'd never be able to tax it and take it off SORN, since it needs to be insured to do that.

They* don't check a vehicle's insurance status when taxing a vehicle nowadays.

*DVLA if (re)taxing online, or at the PO if (re)taxing offline - it'a all about the database(s) in these 'enlightened' ( ) times .

Whether they actually check or not is kinda irrelevant, unless you're fond of committing continuous insurance offences.
