...to buy a second car.
Currently I have a 996 C4S. It's a garage queen. I don't drive it often. My daily driver is my parent's Mondeo.
I've been looking at cheap cars and fancy a convertible as a summer runabout.
I've found an E36 318i convertible for sale. 147,000 miles, 1999, two previous owners prior to the current keeper. Dark metallic blue, grey interior. Car will come with a 12 month MOT if I choose to buy it. It's a private seller and is up for £1000.
Parts seem reasonable. Backbox can be had for £60. Clutch kit £80, front pads and discs £55. I'm pretty handy with a spanner and can do most stuff myself. For bigger stuff, my friend has a garage and can do stuff on the cheap.
I thought the insurance would be a killer. However, my current insurer will mirror my NCB (12 years) AND give me 10% off as multi car discount too. This results in a premium of £250 for myself and my girlfriend fully comp, with £100 excess.
Anyway, I'm off to see it at 6:45.

Well, as the NCB is not transferable to a second car, he actually has no NCB for any second car, so the insurance would potentially be £1000 if his insurance co. weren't giving him a discount. Jeez ...
This, of course, ties him to them somewhat, as come renewal time, he will at best have only 1 years NCB that he could use at another insurance company.
My TVR Tuscan has to live on the street in SW London and I use it all year round. well OK for the major snow and stuff I kept it at my Dad's car port in W.Berks for 6-8 weeks as I was also on a ski Holiday.
Other than that its used whenever. I did get weird looks the other day when the missus was using the Golf and I took it to the Wandsworth tip with 8 bags of garden waste stashed in it, in various places!
IMHO the 996 911 is not going to be collectable for a long time, if ever unless a special edition. Too many of them. The price rise will never beat the deprecuiation and running costs. If you use it more you will get more enjoyment out of nearly fixed costs.. Its a nice car, and so was my BMW M3 (E36) but its just not collectable...
