RE: Radical styling for MX-5 Mk4

It better be good after all this. The development tease of the Mk4 Mazda MX-5 (and Alfa Spider, or Abarth actually) has now continued for so long that the eager anticipation could be waning ever so slightly. Following the announcement of a Mazda/Alfa deal back in 2012, there's been little else to report other than the news of it probably being an Abarth instead, some engine details and the New York rolling chassis.
Well this is fairly extreme...And so it continues. According to our colleagues at What Car? the styling of the next MX-5 will take it very far from the current car and in fact away from the current look seen on the Mazda 3 and 6. Words such as 'radical' and 'extreme' have been uttered by an insider, promising for those who thought the Mk3 car a little nondescript.

Well this is fairly extreme...
As for the Abarth alternative, don't expect a BRZ/GT86 style relationship. The same insider said there will be 'absolutely no resemblance' between the two. So as well as deciding on which brand you prefer, there will be a looks decision to make on the roadsters also. Pricing may well be a factor moreover.
But all this is (again) conjecture unfortunately because there's nothing official on either car. In the MX-5's 25th anniversary year you would hope that some tangible progress will be made. There are rumours of an LA concept for later this year so we'll keep you posted. There has to be something soon, doesn't there?

A major car company today did not announce that it is to announce something.
The lack of announcement of a forthcoming announcement immediately triggered speculation about what the lack of announcement could be about to announce. The company itself remained tight lipped, not even announcing that an announcement would be announced shortly. However, company insiders have not hinted that the lack of announcement of the announcement could be followed by a surprise lack of announcement announcing further details of the announcement in order to maintain announcement interest.
‘Today’s lack of announcement is very significant,’ said omissions expert Tim Slow-Newsweek-WhatCat. ‘It does not announce that there is to be an announcement soon, and that it will not be something worth announcing.’
At the moment, the lack of announcement announcement tells us precious little else about the lack of announcement itself but its very lack of release tells us that blah blah blah another 200 words to fill this bit no announcement announcement announcement announcement announcement announcement announcement announcement announcement announcement announcement get the workie to finish this.

The original MX5 was basically a 'modern interpretation of a classic British sportscar' - in other words they ripped off the design from the Elan, Spitfire, MGB and anything else they could get their hands on. Since then successive models have got blander and blander, which basically proves that Mazda must be pretty clueless in moving the brand forward - hence the alliance with Alfa. Much the same as BMW, who having 'stole' the new Mini from Rover Group (yes it was developed by Rover before the Germans 'invaded') seem at a complete loss as what to do with it going forward, hence the later German developed abominations known as the Countryman, the Coupe and now the Roadster concept.

I think they took the shape for the back edge of the front wheelarch from Marcos.

Err right, sold over 1 million MX-5's, so yeah, no clue what they're doing sums it up pretty well I guess 
The "alliance" with Alfa is nothing to do with design, they're selling Alfa a chassis - the two cars will be designed independently, use different engines and be built by Mazda, it's absolutely not about sharing the cost of developing a platform that will only be used for model, oh no not at all... Absolutely shocking business sense by the Japanese there!

I think the facelift current mx5 is a fine looking machine - functional, poised, balanced. I think people appreciate the low-key good looks of the thing. Hope they don't fk up a good thing!
