None of the above really, they have a stronger brand than the mainstream like Ford and Vauxhall but not as strong in the snobbery stakes as the German big three. I suppose I'd put them in the same sort of category as brands like VW and Honda - sensible, largely classless and generally rather dull.
I think for the most part there isn't a huge difference between cars now, its mostly subjective - they all have faults or issues (some more serious than others) but I don't really see an Audi / Merc / BMW as head and shoulders above a Ford / Vauxhall etc.
I quite like the front end of the old C30 but the back is a bit naff. The current line up seems to reflect every other car you see and as such are anonymous.
Curiously I can't recall the last time I saw a Volvo towing, a few (ok maybe quite a few) years ago they were the car of choice for lugging caravans etc about. Not sure why that's changed.

I think that's pretty much accurate. The V40/V60 estates are slightly more visually interesting than a Focus/Golf/Mondeo/Astra/Vectra/Accord/etc estate and badge wise you'd put them in the 'premium but not aspirational' category (perhaps only Alfa is the other brand to do this now that Saab are gone). What performance kudos they had from the days of the BTCC 850 and Police T5 cars seems to be long gone with R-Design being nothing more than a trim level and the fact that all the new sales are diesels so few petrol turbo bargains to be had second-hand.
Having bought a 2014 S60 I can tell you they are not competition for the big German metal. Its a great car, VERY well equipped but a drivers car it certainly is not. Its good reliable, economical and comfortable transport from A to B. That is all.
Does everything the others do and just as well equipped if not better, but you just can't help thinking it's lacking.
The drivers experience is about as detached as driving a bus. For long motorway runs with your brain in standby it's just the ticket.
I can't fault the car and don't regret its purchase in any way, but no one will covet it.
Summary: Does everything you want it to, always works and costs very little to keep. Inside is a nice place to be but it lacks any desirable traits.
Unexciting cars.

Somewhere between all of them, but I do quite like a Volvo.
Their recent offerings have been good, driven a few and preferred them to VW-clan equivalents. Equally, they'd still sit far enough below the prestige class to be competing at the high end of a lower field.
Also, love the looks of the V40, particularly in sky blue. Not many other current cars can get away with that.

They used to be boring old mens cars, then they became cool in the early 90's, now they're just a bit dull much like a vauxhall imo.....although to be fair some vauxhalls actually look a tad more exciting.
Cant see anything in the current range that particularly appeals and Id say I'm a volvo fan!
