The diameter across the dial case*, excluding the winding crown.

A rectangular face (tonneau or tank) would be say, 33x42 (width x height).

They may also quote lug to lug, which is the distance between the spring bars.

Hope that helps.

  • Edit: Sorry, as yeti said. I meant case.

"40mm" is the case diameter, a measurement along the widest horizontal distance and not including the crown. The diameter across the dial is the dial diameter and is obviously much smaller (like 36mm on a 40mm watch). The measurement makes much more sense with a standard round faced watch.

Lug to lug is the length of the watch from, you've guessed it, lug to lug, I suppose it's the vertical measurement (if looking at the watch as if reading the time) and would usually be measured at right angles to the diameter. Is is indeed spring bar to spring bar.

Lug width is the width of bracelet or strap required (18-22mm usually).

Be aware that when buying used, particularly older and smaller watches, that less reputable sellers will frequently quote a 'diameter' measurement that includes the crown, to give a one shilling sized watch a bit of extra appeal.
